It was much cooler than the past couple weeks.  There had been a bit of rain around 4 am which cleared the air somewhat.  The course is in great condition with near perfect greens and fairways with a lot of roll.   The rough is a different story.   The balls are getting harder to find and hacking out of the rough can in some cases be a real challenge.

There were 7 Members and 1 Friend —  Colin

Closest to the pins —  #3 — BruceG (55′),  #7 — 5Points,  #12 — Brian (15′),  #17 — Leo (10′) .   BruceG did the walk of shame on the 7th.

Leo won the stableford with 40 points (only one par for the day but 4 birdies).  BruceG gave himself a good talking to after his 24 points on Saturday and managed to come 2nd today with 39 points. Leo was the big money winner with 7.5 skins and a 350 baht profit — and a handicap cut of 2 strokes.

Next rounds at Santiburi:     Thursday (30th), Saturday (1st), Monday (3rd) — Please be at the course by 8:15 AM.

Chiang Rai Golfers are at Waterford:  Tuesday and Thursday @ 8:30.

Les had us over to his place for his birthday.  There was plenty of food and beer and everyone had a good time.

5Points has decided it would be better if the Community Cup were later in the year when more of the members are in town.

It was fairly warm.  The course is in great condition for the Singha competition that starts April 4th.   The only downside is the air quality which makes it difficult to follow one’s ball while it is in the air.

There were 9 Members and 1 Friend —  Colin

Closest to the pins —  #3 — BruceG,  #7 — no one,  #12 — Graham,  #17 — Graham

Colin had another great day with 40 points.  Graham and Brian shared 2nd with 38 points. BruceK and Colin were the big money winners with 5 1/3 skins for a 283 baht profit each. BruceK got 4 skins on the fourth hole.   Colin’s new swing can be seen here:   http://i.imgur.com/SzvDnP5.mp4

Results — Thurs Mar 23 — Are you going to Chiang Mai in June?

There was a tournament in the morning at Santiburi so 6 Santiburi Members and 1 Friend  made the trip to Waterford Valley.  The biggest complaint was the greens were bumpy.   The fairways weren’t lush and green like we are used to.

There was only 1 who succeeded getting on a par 3 green with his tee shot — Egbert, on #11, good for 3 skins.  Egbert also won the stableford with 39 points.  Brian was second with 36.  Les was the big money winner with 8 skins and a 320 baht profit.

Next rounds at Santiburi:     Saturday (25th) — Please be at the course by 8:15 AM.  Next week we will be back to our normal schedule of Monday, Thursday and Saturday — Be at the course by 8:15 AM.   The course is closed for the Singha Masters from April 4th to 9th.

Below the scores is an important message from Mark Woods regarding the Chiang Rai- Chiang Mai competition in June.   Please let Mark know if you are playing.

Hi all,

In the first week of June the annual Chiang Mai , Chiang Rai cup will be played over two days either Monday Tuesday or Wednesday Thursday ( up to us ) in Chiang Mai. The two courses it will be played on are Inthanon golf course and Green Valley. Those of us who played the cup in Chiang rai last year know how close we came to upsetting the cup Holders so we are asking for all Golfers in Chiang rai to seriously consider playing this year. This tournament is being arranged by the Chiang mai people and they are asking for the Number of players we can bring down this year. Can you please advise your committee or your Group organisers or me (0615354864 ) if you can play in this years tournament. If anyone knows of people who might be visiting let them know. All are welcome and the more the merrier. More details will follow when we know the numbers who are playing. Please advise as soon as possible.

Remember its only a game so I hope we get the numbers to kick there arse

Mark

Change of plan for tomorrow (Thurs Mar 23)

5Points just got a call from Santiburi.   They have a seniors competition today and tomorrow.  Today they couldn’t get anyone out until 1 PM and suspect it will be the same tomorrow.

If you want to play tomorrow you have the following choices:

  1.  Go to Santiburi and take your chances that you can get out by 1 PM and that it won’t be slow.
  2.   5Points and Leo are teeing off at Waterford at 9 AM.  All are welcome to join.
  3.   Chiang Rai Golfers are at Happy City, 8:30 AM.

If one of the above options appeals to you then it might be advisable to leave a comment below and let others know where you will be playing.

Results — Mon Mar 20th

It was cool this morning at our normal tee time but it certainly warmed up as the day went on.   Although the greens had recently been scarified they are putting quite true.  The fairways are not over-watered and we are actually get some roll on our tee shots.   The rough is getting longer.   Generally speaking the course is in great shape except for some of the bunkers.

There were 10 Members and 1 Friend —  Colin (who is back with us for a couple weeks).  Darryl didn’t succeed in getting out of town yet and made an appearance.   Ronnie (the caddie) made a guest appearance at lunch.  The Organizer of the Day decided to make this a white tee day.

Closest to the pins —  #3 — BruceG (17′),  #7 — no one,  #12 — Colin (12′),  #17 — Colin (8′).  Three did the “Walk of Shame” on the 7th hole — BruceG and Leo (both from about 40′) and Egbert (from about 75′).

Colin who had 27 points from the blue tees on Saturday had an enjoyable day playing from the whites (4 birdies) and finished first with 45 points.   Leo was second with 43 points.

Next rounds at Santiburi:     Thursday (23rd) — Please be at the course by 11:30 AM.  After that we will be back to our normal schedule of Monday, Thursday and Saturday — Be at the course by 8:15 AM.   The course is closed for the Singha Master from April 4th to 9th.

Chiang Rai Golfers are at Santiburi tomorrow, 8:30 AM.  They are also at Happy City on Thursday at 8:30 AM.

It was a noon tee off today due to the juniors competition this morning.   It was fairly warm but there was a nice breeze as well as overcast skies for most of the afternoon.  We weren’t held up by anyone in front of us.   It was pointed out by one of the caddies today that Santiburi is allowing the rough to grow for the Singha competition April 4th-9th.

There were 7 Members and 1 Friend —  Colin (who is back with us for a couple weeks)

Closest to the pins —  #3 — BruceG,  #7 — Colin,  #12 — no one,  #17 — BruceG

BruceG and Leo shared the stableford win with 41 points.   BruceG shot level par for the day.  Jockey John had caddie issues and failed to complete the back 9.

Next rounds at Santiburi:     Monday (20th) — Please be at the course by 8:15 AM.  Thursday (23rd) — Please be at the course by 11:40 AM.

Chiang Rai Golfers are at Santiburi on Tuesday, 8:30 AM.   Apparently the “social” golfers find playing with us on Monday or Thursday not an option.  They are also at Happy City on Thursday at 8:30 AM.

Darryl has left us for about 6 months.  Marc is expected to be away for 2 months.  Peter is leaving for a couple weeks as well.

Results — Thurs Mar 16

Another very warm day.  It didn’t feel as warm today because we teed off at our usual 8:30 tee time instead of at 9:30 like last Tuesday.

There were 11 Members and 2 Friends —  Trond (a visitor to Chiang Rai) and John F

Closest to the pins —  #3 — Egbert (16′),  #7 — BruceG (22′) beating out Darryl by a little more than a foot.   #12 — Leo at 5’10” birdies, Graham at 6’6″ misses his.   #17 — Leo (11′)

Darryl won the stableford with 42 points.   Leo who blobbed the 18th finished 2nd with 39 points.  Leo won the most skins (5.83) for a 450 baht profit.

Next rounds at Santiburi:     Saturday (18th) — Please be at the course by 12 noon.   Monday (20th) — Please be at the course by 8:15 AM.

It was good seeing Jim back again in Chiang Rai.  Too bad he had to leave so soon.  We expect to see him again at the end of June.

Today was the hottest day of the year (so far) and it showed.  There were golfers that had good first nines but faded badly at the end.   The highlight of the day — 5Points got 5 points on the 6th — chipped in for a birdie.

There were 10 Members and 1 Friend — Jim.

Closest to the pins —  #3 + #7 — no one (it is rumoured that BruceG did the Walk of Shame on both holes.  #12 — Peter wins 3 skins hitting it to about 15′.   #17 — no one although Graham did the Walk of Shame from what he says was 70′ — Are the greens that big????

There were 2 excellent scores — Egbert 44 points and Brian 43 points — maybe skipping the Sunday tournament helped them.  Peter won the most skins (5.17) for the second time in a row — this time a 277 baht profit.

Next rounds at Santiburi:     Thursday (16th) — Please be at the course by 8:15 AM.   Also, we are playing at Santiburi on Saturday (18th) — Please be at the course by 12 noon.

Chiang Rai Golfers are at Waterford at 1 PM on Thursday afternoon.

Bernie Memorial Tournament results

It came down to a countback against Bruce Guthrie and Leo but Leo’s stronger back nine was enough to take out the Bernie Memorial Tournament at Waterford Golf Course on Sunday (March 12).   There was a total of 18 golfers which included 6 Santiburi members.

The scoring for the top spots was close in beautiful weather tempered by a strong breeze, with Bruce and Leo locked on 38, followed  by John (‘Five Points’) on 37 and Keith Holt (36).
It was a great showing from Keith, particularly since he hasn’t played since January.

Nearest the pin on the par threes went to Scott Bieber on the third, Bruce G on the 11th and Keith H on the 15th. Nobody hit the 6th.
There was a draw for best score on six mystery holes and the winners were Rob, Jim, Leo, Mark, Five Points and Bastiaan.
The special Cruel Hand of Fate award went to Will Farris who showed great perseverance and good humour despite a sudden unexpected drop in form and a ton of bad luck that saw him wipe eight of the 18 holes.
Rob Parish paid tribute to Bernie and the others we remember in this tournament, and everybody raised their glasses in a toast.
Will F recalled  Bernie with his little stool marching down the fairway and parking himself near the green while he waited for the others to hit up.
Special mention to John Upex who donated a box of balls and Rob who also threw in a sleeve of Srixons for the prize table.
Also thanks to Sara whose painting of Santiburi Golf  Course made first prize so special and Neil Horton, the tourament’s previous winner, who spent hours refurbishing what had become a rather tattered trophy.
