Number of rounds played by Santiburi Members and Friends:

Jan 1 – Apr 30, 2016   :  355            Jan 1 – Apr 29, 2017  :  394

Today two intrepid warrior members showed up – 5Points and Brian.  The weather forecast was iffy, but the day went off without even a hint of rain – a truly beautiful day.  Brian triumphed 1 up over 5Points in their match, shooting a Stableford 32 against 5Point’s’ 30 points, winning 100 baht in the process.

Singha Amateur Update:  Tomorrow is the Singha Amateur competition.  Four members are participating:  Graham, Brian, Bruce G, and 5Points.  Rob and Rodney will be playing from Chiang Rai Golf, as well as two friends of member Les, Kenny Jones and Andy Galway.  Registration starts at 10:00 AM.  The shotgun start is at 12:00 noon.  It appears, from looking at some of the notices posted at the course, that each player’s handicap will be set using System 36.  If you are not familiar with system 36, here is a web link that describes how it works:  https://www.thoughtco.com/how-the-system-36-handicap-formula-works-1564275 Then, using the handicap obtained via System 36, your round will be scored using regular Stableford scoring.

Next events:

Monday, 1 May:  We have a tee time (08:30).  Few if any SMAF regulars are planning to attend because of the Singha Amateur the previous day, but the tee time remains.  Please note the course will likely be starting heavy maintenance on the putting green and greens 1 – 9.

Thursday, 4 May:  Santiburi – Show up 8:15 (tee-off 8:30).

Today Santiburi remained in great condition due to the course management’s decision to postpone scheduled green coring/sanding until after Sunday’s Singha Amateur tournament.  The weather was sunny, hazy, and very hot!  Today we had five members (5Points, Graham, Bruce G, Brian, and Jockey John) and five friends, all from Chiang Rai Golfers group (known affectionately by some as “The Dark Side”) (Rob, Neil, Ross, Scott, and Rodney).
Since we had five SMAF and five CRG, we played a team game, SMAF vs CRG.  Each team member played a singles match against one opposing team player. Winning the match awarded one point for  the players team.  A tie awarded one-half point to each team. The team with the most win points would win the prize pool, to which each participant donated 100 baht.
Here are the results:
Match 1:  Rob (14) v. Bruce G (5).  Bruce won 2&1.
Match 2:  Neil (20) v. Graham (20).  All Square
Match 3:  Ross (21) v. Brian (23).  Brian won 3&1.
Match 4:  Scott (20) v. Jockey (22).  Jockey won 1 up.
Match 5: Rodney (32) v. 5Points (25).  Rodney won 2&1.
Final score:  CRG 1.5   —   SMAF 3.5
Everyone stated they enjoyed the format as a good change and we should seek future opportunities to get the two groups together on a periodic basis.
Next events:
Saturday, 29 April.  5Points and Brian plan to play.  8:15 show up, 8:30 tee off, Santiburi.
Sunday, 30 April.  Singha Amateur.  12 noon shotgun start.
Monday, 1 May.  We have 8:30 tee time but few may show due to Singha Amateur previous day.

Another beautiful day at Santiburi.  The course remains in great condition.  The weather was hot and steamy!  We had five members today (5Points, Graham, Brian, Bruce G, and Jockey John).  We played our standard skins game.  With five players, one has to win the hole outright, and that can lead to a lot of carry-overs.  Jockey John won the 11th hole for 5 skins, and birdied the 17th hole for 6 skins plus 1 skin for closest, which put him far ahead of the pack.  Brian tied with Jockey John  for the Stableford.  Jockey John had a rough front 9 (15 Points), but really turned it on for a gross 41 and 24 points on the back to grab a share of the Stableford and gobble up a bunch of skins as well.  Here are the results:

Stableford scores / Skins Won / Money Won (Lost):

 Brian:  39 Points / 3.5 Skins / (-75 Baht)

Jockey John :  39 Points / 14.5 Skins / +475 Baht

Bruce G:  33 points / 3 Skins / (-100 Baht)

Santiburi is in marvelous condition.  The course was dry, and the rough, while still long, has been cut.  Our group is starting to realize that perhaps the best strategy is to just get back to the fairway with a lofted club, rather than bite off too much, when hitting out of the rough.  That strategy worked a bit better today.  Still, some of us struggled mightily with what stacks up to be a much more difficult golf course than it has been playing when the rough is low.  We had five members today:  5Points, Bruce G, Brian, Les, and Jockey John.  We played our standard skins game.  With five players, one has to win the hole outright, and that can lead to a lot of carry-overs.  Brian won the 15th hole for 6 skins, and the 4th hole for 3 skins, which put him far ahead of the pack.  Here are the results:

Stableford scores / Skins Won / Money Won (Lost):

 Brian (1st place):  35 Points / 14 Skins / +450 Baht

5Points (2nd Place):  32 Points / 5 Skins / 0 Baht (Broke Even)

Bruce G:  28 points / 2 Skins / (-150 Baht)

Jockey John:  22 points / 1 skin / (-200 Baht)

Les:  22 Points / 3 skins / (-100 Baht)

The course is in spectacular condition, but add a light rain and the rough was very difficult.  Scores were generally lower today.   We had 6 members (5Points, Graham, Bruce G, Bruce K, Brian, and Les) and we played a team game, 3 and 3, each team took the best score for the first 6 holes; the two best for the next six holes; and all three scores for the final six holes.  We played for 100 baht per person, plus 25 baht per person for each of the four par 3’s.
Graham, Brian, and Bruce K scored 80, beating Bruce G, 5Points and Les, who scored 67.  Bruce took three of the closest prizes and Brian got one.
Here are the Stableford scores, gross scores and money won/lost:
Les – 21 points – 121 – (-200)
Graham – 28 points – 100 – broke even
5Points – 29 points – 103 – (-200)
Bruce G – 33 points – 79 – +250
Bruce K – 39 points – 98 – broke even
Brian – 42 points – 90 – +150
We filled all eight of the Singha Amateur slots!  Lee’s friend from Chiang Mai, Kenny, and his buddy Andy will join 5points, Bruce G, Graham, Brian, Mark W, and Rodney.

Results – Sat Apr 15th — Update on Singha Amateur Event (One Slot Left!!)

Today we had five members:  5Points, Graham, Bruce G, Brian, and Merv.  We played our normal skins game.  The conditions are still spectacular, although the rough is, well, rough.  Several of us lost considerable distance and accuracy hitting shots from the rough, sometimes just inches from the fairway.  Recent rains made the situation just that much more difficult.  Although Graham won the Stableford and Merv came in second, they came in next to last and last, respectively, on the skins total.  Graham was getting his parade rained on all day!  Good he has that brand new Singha umbrella.  See the scores, attached.  Here is the results summary:

Closest to the pins:  No one won hole #3.  Bruce G won hole #7 for two skins.  Brian was the only one to hit #12, and Graham hit beautiful shot to within 15 feet  of a back pin on #17, to best Bruce G by about 3 feet.

 Stableford scores:

                — Graham (1st  Place):  35 points

                — Merv (2nd Place):  33 points

                — Brian:  32 points

                — 5Points:  31 points

                — Bruce G:  30 points

The weather report was ominous, and things looked rather iffy as we wended our way around the course, but the rain held off until we finished and we got our round in.  Today we had five members:  5Points, Graham, Bruce G, Brian, and Jockey John.  We played our normal skins game.  Afterwards, Graham announced it was his 60th birthday, and bought us all lunch.  Happy Birthday, Graham!  Graham was also the winner of the Stableford and the winner of the most skins.  Way to go, Birthday, Boy!  See the scores, attached.  Here is the results summary:

Skins won:  23 (No one won the last two holes, and since we were a five-ball, those skins are not awarded)

Closest to the pins:  Graham won hole #3.  Bruce G won holes #7, #12, and #17.  Those were the only skins he won all day!  You gotta pity those poor low handicappers.

Stableford scores:

                — Graham (1st  Place):  37 points

                — 5Points (2nd Place):  34 points

                — Jockey John:  30 points

In other news today — There were rumours that the Dutch Consulate in Australia was going to prevent Leo’s arrival.  However, the head of Australian Immigration Mr. Tiny Woody wasn’t there to tell him that “he couldn’t enter.”  Leo successfully made it to his destination.  That evening Andrew forced a jet-lagged Leo to drink 3 bottles of wine with him.  This afternoon on a beautiful day on a  beautiful course complete with kangaroos it was decided not to play for money.   It could be noted that this was a fair result as neither played very well.

Results — Mon Apr 10 — Updated handicaps

Today was the day following the conclusion of the Singha Masters, and All-Thailand Tour professional golf tournament held annually at Santiburi Golf Club.  The course management had been preparing the course all year for this tournament, and the course conditions were the best we have seen in a long time.  That said, the rough was much longer than normal (especially around the sand traps), the greens were fast, and the course played much more difficult than usual.

Because of the great, pro-level conditions, we sent out wider invitations and encouraged many from the greater Chiang Rai golf community to join us.  We had a great turnout, with nine members (5Points, Leo, Graham, Les, Merv, Peter, Bruce G, Bruce K, and Brian) and six friends (Rob, John F., Mark W., Rodney, Ross F., and Scott).  Since we had 14 or more playing, we decided to separate into two flights, with eight low handicappers competing against each other, and the seven higher handicappers facing off among themselves.  All players competed together for the closest-to-the-pin prizes on each par-3 hole.

 Closest to the pins:  #3 — Leo,  #7 — BruceG,  #12 — Peter,  #17 John F

The high handicap stableford winner with the best score of the 2 groups was Brian with 38 points.  Merv and BruceK split the 2nd money with 35 points each.   The low handicap winners were BruceG and JohnF each with 35 points.  The biggest money winner with 7 skins and a profit of 380 baht was JohnF.
