Due to tournament play at Santiburi, we once again played at Waterford.  Four members participated:  Peter, 5Points, Bruce G and Brian.

We decided to play a 2-player match play team game, Modified Alternate Shot, AKA “Greensomes”, in which both players on a team hit their tee shots, and then select their preferred shot from which to play onwards.  The player whose tee shot was not selected must play the next shot, and then the players alternate until the ball is holed.   We specified that each team must use at least six tee shots from each player, including two shots each on the four par-3 holes.  We played the high and low handicappers on one team (Bruce G and 5Points) and the middle two (Peter and Brian) on the other team.  For handicaps, we summed the team members handicaps, and awarded the team with the highest joint handicap 75% of the difference.  That gave Peter and Brian 5 strokes.

It was a very tight match all day, with Bruce and 5Points up by one hole at the turn.  However, the back nine saw Peter and Brian go up one at hole 12.  Bruce and 5Points squared it at 14,and went up one again at 15.  Brian hit a fantastic approach at 16 to set up Peter’s birdie putt, and square the match again.  Hole 17 was halved in ugly fashion, so the match came down to the final hole.  On hole 18 (on which Peter and Brian had a stroke) Bruce and 5Points bogeyed, and Peter sunk their bogey putt for the win.

All in all it was a thrilling day and it was fun to try a different format.

Next game:  Santiburi Members and Friends invite you to join us this Monday  (April 10th) for a round of golf under championship course conditions.   Please be at the course by 8:15.   We currently have 12 confirmed to play:  5Points, Leo, Graham, Les, Merv, Peter, Bruce G, Mark W., Ross F., John F., Rob P., and Brian.  We have plenty of room for more players, so respond to this blog post or let 5Points know if you will be coming.  The greens are lightning fast — the rough is deep — the bunkers will be in perfect shape if it doesn’t rain on Sunday night.  Everyone is welcome to play, participation in our usual (250 baht) skins game is optional.   Green fee 1000 baht, caddie fee 300 baht,  carts are optional at 600 baht per person.
