Today was a beautiful, if humid, day for golf at Santiburi.  The course is undergoing maintenance, as is always the case during these waning days of the rainy season.  The front nine greens are in the process of being scarified, cored and sanded.  The back nine fairways are in the process of being cored and sanded.  Combined with generally wet conditions, it makes for more difficult playing.

There were eight participants today — six members and two friends:  Garry and Will.  We played lift, clean and place on the fairways, and allowed for lift, clean and drop in the rough if a player’s ball is in an area affected by course maintenance (weed removal divots and the like).

The Organizer of the Day (Andrew) arranged four-man teams, with each team recording the sum of the best three balls as the team score.  Each player contributed 100 Baht for the team score prize.  We also played closest-to-the-pins on each par-3 hole, for a total of 40 baht per player.  We went off the back nine first, as the front nine greens were being attended to by the greenskeeper staff.

Very wet at Santiburi.
So after a few phone calls there were 4 members Marc, Bruce G , Andrew , Graham , and  1 Friend Garry  (Andrews mate )
There were a 5 ball ( juniors ) that hit off on the 1st  so we went to the 10th, a few showers till the 14th hole then nothing but bloody hot.
We decided to play normal skins and nearest pins.
Nearest Pin
#12 –   Graham
#17 –   Garry
#3 – Graham
#7 – Garry  (but very sadly had to DO THE WALK OF SHAME )

Because Garry did WOS on the 7th and the last hole  (was tied Marc and Graham) there was only 23 skins up for grabs.
Graham tried his hardest to beat Peter R’s record of 15 skins but alas.
Santiburi will start coring the front nine green on Monday  (Big – small ????????)
We will just have to wait and see.

The weather was not especially good today, but it was not bad enough to prevent us from playing.  We had a light sprinkling of rain virtually the entire round, getting increasingly heavier as we finished, but never enough to require more than a temporary deployment of either the umbrella, the rain cover or both.

The course was fairly soft and the course was under cart-path-only status, so we played lift-clean-and-place in the fairway.  We had seven players today:  four Members and three Friends (Ross F. from Chiang Rai Golfers; Colin, and Andrew’s friend from Australia Garry).   This was Colin’s last day until March, as he is returning to Japan to teach school.

Colin went out with a bang, including reeling off three straight birdies (holes 3-5), grabbing two of the four closest-to-the-pin prizes, and winning the most skins (6.5).  Andrew had the best Stableford score (36 points) but still managed to lose money (-40 Baht).  Both Marc and 5Points tied for the next-to-lowest Stableford score (29 points) but won multi-skin holes at critical moments (5Points won 4 skins on hole 12, and Marc won 5 skins on hole 18) to end up winning 100 Baht each.

Here are the results:

Closest-to-the-pins:

  • Hole 3:  Colin
  • Hole 7:  No one (Bruce G did the walk of shame)
  • Hole 12:  Bruce G x 2 (redeeming his walk of shame…  it is rumored that Ross F did the walk of shame on 12.)
  • Hole 17:  Colin

  • Winner:  Andrew (36 Points)

The weather looked very gloomy at tee time but we decided to plod on.

There were 3 Members ( Graham, Andrew and Bruce G) and 4 Friends ( Colin , Garry , Charchy, and tourist Graham)

We eventually decided that we would play a team game with nearest the pins.

By the time we reached the 4th hole the rain had gone but the humidity hung around but pretty good conditions, the course has got a lot of water over the last couple of days and as a result NO run on the ball at all.

On 3rd hole Team Colin was  joined by Graham a visitor for England just here for a couple of days, nice guy, hits a good ball, and whats more he joined us for lunch and a beer and as well as Leo who also joined us for lunch.

Today was an absolutely gorgeous golf day.  The course was in fine condition, except for a few soft spots due to rain and back nine fairway coring.

We had six participants:  five Members and one Friend, Colin.  The Organizer of the Day (OOD) Andrew decreed we would play three-man teams, with the two best scores added on each hole to make the team score.  The best total score would win the match for that team.  Each player put in 160 baht, plus 40 baht for individual closest-to-the-pin prizes on each par 3 hole.

Today the weather report called for rain, but the golf gods were kind to us once again and the rain never materialized.  The conditions were generally good, although several back nine fairways have been recently cored and sanded, and were soft and did not provide much run.  All the greens which were cored and sanded earlier in the week (small-tine coring) have completely recovered and the greens rolled very well.

We had five players:  four members and one friend, Colin.  We played our usual five-ball skins game.  Some highlights:  Both Andrew and 5Points birdied twice — Andrew birdied holes 1 and 17, and 5Points birdied holes 5 and 12.  There were six 4-pointers, including the four birdies mentioned, plus a birdie by Colin (Hole 11) and a par by Les (Hole 8).  Hole 18 ended in a tie, and with a single group our policy is that the skin for that hole is not awarded (it is awarded to the winner of the Stableford in blind skins, in which there is more than one group playing).  Thus only 24 skins were awarded.

Here are the results:

Stableford scores:

  • Winner:  Colin (40 points)
  • Runner-up:  Andrew (36 points)

Closest-to-the-pins:

  • Hole 3:  Andrew

Updated Handicaps – Money List

A few notes from the outgoing Fairness Specialist.

Skins:   Back in the beginning it was perceived that skins favoured the high handicappers.  It doesn’t.  The biggest positive of skins is that if someone is having a bad day they are inclined to remain interested in the next hole because it matters.  Handicap manipulation can occur if the last couple holes don’t matter. Medal and Stableford players tend to throw in the towel if they start poorly.

White tees:  Back in 2009 there were 14 Santiburi members that played 25 or more times.  Of the 14 members there were 6 that had handicaps of 14 or less, 4 between 15 and 19, and 4 that had handicaps of 20 or more with the highest being 25.   Currently there is 1 member below 16, 4 members 17 – 19, 6 in the 20’s, and 3 in the 30’s.  In 2009 it made sense to play the blues.   The members have evolved into a group where several are struggling from the blues.  Perhaps it is time to change to having most if not all competitions from the white tees.

Handicaps:   There are 3 handicap systems used in the world (USGA, EGA and CONGU).  They all have their flaws.  None of them address the fact that Santiburi can play up to 4 strokes more difficult depending on the tee boxes used and the dampness of the rough and fairway. The purpose of handicaps is to try make a level playing field.   Everyone should have an equal chance to win money no matter what level of ability they possess.   Consideration should be given to those that frequently lose money.   We don’t want players leaving the group because they usually lose money.   That isn’t fun!   The USGA manual states that the Handicap Committee may adjust handicaps.  I adopted the title “Fairness Specialist” because I recognized that there is more to handicapping than just inputting scores and watching a computer spew out handicaps.   Computers don’t understand what is fair.

I never penalize someone for a good round or a streak of good rounds.   The handicap system does that well enough.   However during the past year or so I have routinely given 2 bonus shots for the following:

  • Anyone new that has never played or has limited experience at Santiburi. I have never found a visitor to exaggerate his handicap.   Lack of course knowledge is worth at least 2 strokes.
  • Anyone that has been out of town for 3 or more months. Almost all return “rusty”.
  • Anyone that has been losing on a regular basis that feels they need the extra help. Skins may not suit some golfer’s style of play.  It’s rare that this happens but there is a need to keep everyone happy.

Once any of the above manage 36+ points a couple times over a short period of time I take the bonus strokes away.

I find the Chiang Rai Golfers handicaps to be compatible with ours and accept their handicaps as they are.

In closing I would like to thank all the members (and former members) for their support this past 2 and a half years and hope you all support the new Fairness Specialist (Graham) as well.  Graham knows he can always count on me for help and advise.

Another steamy day at Santiburi.  The greenskeeper staff did small-tine aeration on the front nine greens in front of our group, and spread topsoil on the greens behind us.  The aeration was virtually unnoticeable.  The sanding will likely be unnoticeable by next Thursday, when we play again.  The course was in excellent condition.

We had seven players:  Five members and two friends, Colin and Jeff.  Jeff and Peter are returning to Pattaya shortly, so this is Jeff’s last round with us.  It was a pleasure meeting you and playing with you, Jeff!  Please join us again when you are in town!  Peter will return in three weeks or so.

We played individual skins.  Here are the results:

It was a warm, muggy day at Santiburi.  The course was in fine condition, with all bunkers repaired and the fairways in good shape.  We had eight players:  six members and two friends, Colin and Jeff.  The Organizer of the Day, Andrew, called for foursome skins, with team awards for closest-to-the-pins on all par 3’s and team awards for the best stableford score and runner-up score.

I’ll go ahead and say it, 5Points was hard-pressed to figure all this out at the end.  Maybe he should drink; it may have all been clearer at the end of the day.  Nonetheless, after some interminable delays, we calculated the winnings and came to an amicable agreement on the outcome.  Leo, come back!  Everyone agrees, you do this so much better than 5Points!

Here are the results:

Closest to the Pins:

  • Hole 3: Bruce G (1 skin for Team Bruce G)
  • Hole 7: Peter (1 skin for Team 5Points)
  • Hole 12: Andrew (1 skin for Team Graham)
  • Hole 17: Jeff (1 skin for Team Les)

Stableford:

  • Stableford Winner:  Bruce G – 35 Points (2 skins for Team Bruce G)
  • Runner Up:  Tie Andrew and Graham – 32 Points (1 skin for Team Graham)

With team skins, each team records the best stableford score for each hole.  With four teams, a tie is a carryover — holes must be won outright.    There were a lot of carry-overs, and once again Team Les made the right scores on the right holes, including winning 7 skins on hole 10.  Team Bruce G won 6 skins on hole 18 due to a tie, since our standard practice with blind skins is to award a carry-over on hole 18 to the team with the highest stableford score.
