Participation Statistics, January – October 2017:

Number of rounds played by Santiburi Members and Friends:

  • Jan 1 – Oct 31, 2016 :  753
  • Jan 1 – Oct 31, 2017 :  801

There were six participants today:  five members and one friend, Will.  The cool, dry season arrived, delivering one of the most beautiful golf days of the year, with a sunny, dry day, fast greens and great course conditions.  We played our normal skins game from the blue tees.

It was sunny with a chance of drones!  Yes, drones.  As the first group  prepared to putt on the ninth green, a drone appeared overhead.  It distracted some members of the party (notably 5Points) and some were heard to say that they missed a putt because of the unusual sound and the reality of a drone hovering overhead.  Aren’t those subject to licensing requirements?

On the tenth tee, it was clear that the drone was being operated by a golfer from a large group who were either in the restaurant or gathered near the pro shop before teeing off on the first hole.  After 5Points screamed unbecomingly at the operator to land his <discouraging word> drone, the operator finally realized he was distracting the golfers (who would have thought?) and brought the offending item down from the sky.  5Points was heard to mumble something about “black helicopters” and eye the sky nervously for the rest of the day.  Ironically, despite his whinging incessantly, he played better on the back nine than he did on the front.

The drones had no effect on Bruce G, who shot an even par 72 and hammered the rest of the field, except for Will, who put up a respectable 40 points.

Here are the results:

Stableford:

  • Winner:  Bruce G (43 points)
  • Runner-up:  Will (40 points)

Closest to the pins:

  • Hole 3:  Leo
  • Hole 7:  Bruce G (Leo did the Walk of Shame)
  • Hole 12:  Bruce G
  • Hole 17:  no one hit the green – skin not awarded

Today was the first day in probably two years or more that we were rained off the course mid-round.  In fact, I’m not sure it has ever happened.  Isn’t the rainy season over yet?

We started with four golfers (5Points, Graham, Egbert, and Bruce G), none of whom were expecting rain.  As we teed off on the first hole the first indication that all was not well appeared, and by the time we reached the second fairway the heavens opened.  After waiting around under the trees for about 15 minutes, it was clear the rain was settling in for a while.  We called the clubhouse and they helpfully sent out two carts to retrieve us.

After watching the rain dismally from the restaurant for a while, Graham first departed, then Egbert.  Of course, it finally stopped, and 5Points and Bruce G played their normal side bet game for 100 baht from the blue tees.  Bruce shot 3 over 75 and hammered 5Points, who never really had a chance.  But, he never has a chance, does he?  Bruce G asks us not to tell him.  Just let him toil away in perpetuity, like Sisyphus pushing the rock up the hill.  At least he didn’t run away because of the rain!

The rains of yesterday made Santiburi pretty wet, and the bunkers were ravaged.  We played lift, clean and place in the fairway, and generally had few problems.  We had four members today, and we played our standard skins game from the blue tees (except Leo — white tees).  We played today in place of tomorrow because the course is closed, due to the cremation of His Majesty the King Bhumibol Adulyadej on Thursday, 26 October.

Egbert rolled today, wiping out the field with 44 stableford points and two of the four closest-to-the-pin prizes.  5Points and Bruce G tied for stableford runner up.

The weather looked dismal but five intrepid members started off, playing their regular skins game from the blue tees (Leo played white tees, as he has announced he will be doing for the foreseeable future).  All was well until the group finished the nith hole. whereupon the heavens opened and rain poured for the better part of 45 minutes.

Leo, who had a prior commitment for the afternoon, called it a day, having won only one skin over the first nine.  The remaining four soldiered on and the rains held off through the rest of the round.  Although the rain was heavy while it lasted, and we could see standing water on the putting green, the ninth green, and the eighteenth, it all drained away afterwards (except for some bunkers with some standing water).

Once again the 13th hole proved decisive.  Most holes on the front nine were won outright, but the 7th, 8th, and 9th holes had pushed at the turn, and then 10, 11, and 12 pushed as well.  5Points bogied for three points on 13 to win 7 skins.  Darn high handicappers!  At the end of the day, it was 5Points winning the Stableford and the most skins, while Graham, who came in second on the Stableford (one point behind 5Points) but won no skins at all.  I guess it just doesn’t pay to play steady, consistent golf.  At least not in skins.  If you ain’t going for it, you ain’t trying hard enough!  As for the Closest to the pin prizes, Bruce G took all of them.  Darn low handicappers!  If you aren’t going for it, and actually making it, you aren’t good enough to beat Bruce G!

Another spectacular day for golf.  Now that we are in the cool dry season, and the major maintenance projects appear to be completed, we are hopeful that the golf is going to start getting really good at Santiburi.  The course is in pretty good condition, with fairways, greens, bunkers and rough areas all in excellent shape.

There were four participants today, all members.  We played our normal skins game from the blue tees.  All four players each won a closest-to-the-pin prize.  Both 5Points and Egbert birdied hole 12 (worth four skins) to push it to the 13th hole, where Graham slipped in with a par to win five skins.  That hole proved decisive, as Graham took home the lion’s share and everyone else were donating to Graham’s retirement fund to some extent.  Here are the results:

Stableford:

  • Winner/Runner up:  Graham and Egbert tied with 38 points

The day started beautifully cool and overcast, and we nearly got away without getting wet, but it was only a light rain starting on the 16th hole, which did not interfere with play.  We had five participants, all members.  Once again Egbert dominated, winning the stableford and the lion’s share of the skins.  The highlight of the day was watching Leo’s second shot on the second hole go right and bounce once near the cart path before landing in the bed of a maintenance pickup truck that was trundling by.  The driver didn’t notice, and kept driving on to his intended destination more than halfway to the third hole green.  Bruce had a “walk of shame” on Hole 7, leaving it open for Leo’s win, who had also hit the green but successfully made his par putt.  Graham and 5Points both hit the green on 17, but far away from the hole (Graham was closest).  However, both did their own walk of shame, as neither of them found the bottom of the hole in par or better.

A question on the rules of golf arose on the 9th hole.  Graham’s ball had come to rest about 5 feet short of the green, and Egbert, who was putting from off the green at a position behind Graham’s ball, struck Graham’s ball with his ball.  None of us was sure whether Graham’s ball should be replaced in its original position, or if this was a rule that applied only on the putting surface.  Here is the answer:

Per Rule 18-5, if a ball in play and at rest is moved by another ball in motion after a stroke, the moved ball must be replaced.

Per the basic definitions, a ball is “in play” as soon as a player has made a stroke on the teeing ground.  It remains in play until it is holed, except when it is lost, out of bounds or lifted.  Thus, Graham’s ball should be replaced in its original position.

A beautiful (if steamy) day for golf.  Bruce G displayed a clever weather application he had designed for his Android phone that may be able to help us decide whether or not to come to the course for play on iffy weather days.  5Points was somewhat distracted by the app, as he gazed at it for hours and clearly wasn’t focused on golf.  Graham asked for royalties, as he believes he served as Bruce’s inspiration for the app.  Indeed, he certainly did!  We had five participants, all members.  We played our normal skins game from the blue tees.   Egbert dominated with birdies on holes 3 and 12.  There were two Walks of Shame:  Bruce G on hole 7 and Graham on hole 17.  Hole 17 closest was not won by anyone, most notably not by Graham, so only 24 skins were awarded.  Here are the results:

Stableford:

  • Winner:  Egbert (36 points)
  • Runner Up:  Graham and Bruce G (34 points each)

Closest to the pins:

  • Hole 3:  Bruce G
  • Hole 7:  No One (Bruce G Walk of Shame)
  • Hole 12:  Egbert (x2) (Graham hit the flagstick with his tee shot but it ricocheted farther away than Egbert’s ball)
