This is our last round for 2017.  It has been a great year for Santiburi members and Friends!  Your humble correspondent would like to thank everyone for their participation in our informal golf group.  We’ve made a lot of friends, and played a lot of fun golf.  Here’s looking forward to an even better year in 2018!

Please note that we have cancelled our tee time for January 1, 2018, because an informal poll around the table indicated no one planned to play on that day.  Better to sleep it off and come back refreshed!  Our first SMAF event of 2018 will be Thursday, January 4, 2018 (we have three tee times starting at 8:48 AM).

We had a very large group today:  eleven members and two friends, Garry and Mickey (Peter’s friend).  Also returning after a long absence was Member Darryl.  Welcome back, Darryl!  His donations were greatly missed and much appreciated today.

The weather was overcast and mild, a perfect golf day.  The course remains in top-notch condition.  5Points and Andrew, who played in the same group, had a shoot-out to grab the top Stableford prize.  5Points won it by won point over Andrew, 41 to 40.  It should be noted that after last Thursday’s performance, 5Points arbitrarily cut his own handicap by 2 Points, from 30 to 28.  Some may say he didn’t cut enough!  The drop in his handicap meant he lost a stroke on the handicap-12 13th hole.  He birdied that hole today for 4 Points  (so did Leo).  it could have been a 5Pointer!

Today the skins were spread around a bit more evenly.  Brian was the big winner with 5 skins.  5Points came in second with 4 skins.

Closes to the pins were also spread out.  Paul took Hole #3.  Peter took Hole #7 (Young did the Walk of Shame).  Brian got #12.  Young redeemed herself on Hole #17 with a closest prize and a 4-point birdie.

This is definitely one of the biggest turnouts of the year, and it was so much fun to get together with friends old and new.  Please accept our best wishes for all of our SMAF family to have a wonderful new year of health, happiness, and great golf!  Please be safe and have a great time — we will see you next year!

Results – Thursday, December 28, 2017

Despite the rain that fell all day yesterday and all night last night, the course remained in excellent condition.  There was, surprisingly, no need for lift, clean and place, so we played the ball down.

Today we had eleven participants; nine members, and two friends: Garry (Andrew’s mate) and Pong, a Thai from Bangkok playing Santiburi for the first time.  We played our regular skins game from the blue tees (Leo played from the white tees, and Young played from the red tees).

5Points dominated the action today, winning the stableford contest (42 points), getting a closest-to-the-pin prize for 2 skins, garnering the most skins (9.67), and winning the most money (813 baht).  Paul came in second on the stableford with 35 points.

There were several Walks of Shame today, as the tees were back for most of the blue tees.  Young did her walk on the 3rd hole (John won the closest prize).  Leo did his walk on the 7th hole (no one else hit the 7th green).  Peter tried to pretend he did no Walk of Shame, but witnesses attested that he did his on the 12th hole (Garry was closest for a brief happy period, until 5Points dropped his tee shot in closer).  Peter redeemed himself on the 17th hole with a fine shot to eight feet, and made his par.

Results — Christmas Day 2017

It was much warmer on the first tee today.   Not surprisingly the course wasn’t very busy and we got around in a timely manner.  There were 4 members for our Christmas Day round.

The stableford winner was Graham (41 pts).   Closest to the pins:  #3 — no one,  #7 — no one,  #12 — Leo (5′ and a missed birdie),  #17 — no one.  Leo was the only money winner (120 baht) and he bought lunch for those present.

It was very chilly on the first tee today (about 11 C).   The course remains in good condition with the greens extremely fast.   There were a lot of 3 putts as the ball has a tendency to break more when hit softer.  We had 9 members including Doc who is back in Chiang Rai for about 4 months and 1 friend (Garry).

The stableford winner was Brian (37 pts) followed by Andrew (35 pts).   Closest to the pins:  #3  Young (19′),  #7 — John P (17′),  #12 — Garry (4′ and a birdie),  #17 — not won.  Andrew was the big money winner (255 baht) followed by John P and Brian (210 baht  each).

Please note that some of us will be playing Christmas Day at the usual tee time (be at the course by 8:15 am).    Commissioner Graham also reminded everyone to check the blog regularly for the next couple months as our tee times will not be the same every golf day during peak season.

The day dawned chilly, but by game time the air had warmed, and the weather was wonderful for golf, if a bit windy toward the end of the round.  The winds of yesterday and today dried out the greens significantly, and they were fast as lightning.  The course is in excellent condition.

We had seven participants today, all members.  For a change (and since most the blue tees on the front were way back for some reason) we decided to play stroke play from the white tees (Young played from the red tees).  We paid the top three net scores, 400/200/100, and we also added 10 baht per player for each par-3 for closest-to-the-pin prizes.

5Points was on his game today, playing 17 holes of good golf, and limping home on 18 with not enough damage done to rob him of the top prize.  He shot a net 65.  Second best was Paul, who shot a net 70.  Bruce G took the third spot with a net 74.

A beautiful late fall day at Santiburi.  The course is in excellent condition.  Today we noticed the course was a little drier than it has been, although some of the rough remains soft in places.

We had eight participants today, all members.  We played our regular skins game from the blue tees (Leo played from the white tees, and Young played from the red tees).

Paul had a great round, including two birdies (nearly three).  He won closest the the pin on Hole 17, and took the stableford prize.  Leo came in second on the stableford score, and got a closest prize on Hole 3.  Paul dominated on the skins, winning 11 total.  The next best skins winner was Brian, with 5.5 skins.  Everyone else was a net donator.

Here are the results:

  • Winner:  Paul (37 points)
  • Runner-Up:  Leo (34 Points)

Closest to the pins:

  • Hole 7:  5Points

Today was another beautiful day – partly cloudy, not too hot.  The course is in great shape.  The course was very crowded, even for a Saturday, as there was a large local tournament with over 150 players, as well as the increased high season traffic.  However, the course moved pretty well.  We were generally waiting for a short time on every tee box, but the groups moved at a decent pace. so we ended up only about 30 minutes over our normal playing time.

We had seven participants, all members.  Today we were happy to welcome three new members into our group:  Paul Park, and his wife, Young, and their friend John Park.  Several of us have played with John in the past, at Waterford.  Paul and Young spend three months here and three months in S. Korea on an alternating basis.

We played our normal skins game from the blue tees (Young played from the red tees).  Young and 5Points kept pace with each other on the front nine, both scoring 19 points, but Young pulled away on the back on the strength of her four-point par on 10 and her four-point birdie on Hole 12.  Young won the stableford prize with a sterling 40 points, and 5Points was runner-up at 39 points.

Graham hit the 3rd green for the closest prize.  5Points was the only one to hit the green on Hole 7, but it was a good 50 feet away, and he ended up doing the “Walk of Shame”.  Graham edged 5Points out on Hole 12 by 2 inches — Graham’s shot was a flagstick plus four inches away from the hole, and 5Points’ shot was a flagstick plus six inches away.  Graham’s money – 2 skins.  Then, Graham took 17 with a beautiful shot to seven feet.  So, Graham took all the closest prizes.  Good thing for him that Bruce G wasn’t here!

A beautiful, clear, nearly cloudless day, with relatively low humidity and mild temperatures.  The course remains in excellent condition.

Today we had five participants:  four members and one friend, Ralph.  We played our regular skins game from the blue tees, except for Leo and Ralph, who played from the white tees.

Brian started off very hot, and won a plurality of the skins on the front nine, including garnering a closest skin on hole 3.  At the turn he had 20 points and five skins.  His closest competitor, Ralph, had two skins and 17 points.  Everyone else had one or zero skins, and were tied at 13 stableford points. No one hit the green on hole 7, and hole 9 carried over to hole 10.  Who could stop Brian from rolling to victory?

Brian could, apparently, with some help from 5Points.  On the back nine, 5Points and Brian switched roles.  Brian managed only 13 points on the back nine, and only one more skin (for stableford runner-up).  What is it about the number 13?  Ralph also scored 13 points on the back nine, meaning everyone had a nine-hole round of 13 stableford points, either on the front or the back.

5Points parred 10, then double-bogied 11 and 12.  But then he reeled off four straight bogies for 3 points each, and then topped that by parring 17 (winning a triple-skin closest prize along the way) and parring 18, for 25 points and a gross 44 on the back nine, his lowest nine-hole round in months.  he won a total of 13 skins and

Ralph bought the drinks after the round, as this is his last round before returning to Hawaii until next year.  It was great playing with you, Ralph!  Thanks for joining us!  We look forward to having you back with us when you return.

Rain overnight softened the course and made some of the bunkers resemble water hazards, but the course remains in excellent condition otherwise.

Today we had six participants:  five members and one friend, Ralph.  We played our regular skins game from the blue tees (Ralph played form the white tees).  Ralph will play one more round with us, on Thursday, before heading back to his other paradisiacal abode in Hawaii.  Egbert is heading out tonight for Germany, returning after the new year.

Graham reported a dismal front nine, but he came on strong in the end, including a spectacular hit-the-pin approach and short putt for birdie to get five points on 18.  That put him over the “real” 5Points by one point to win the stableford prize.  Bruce G took closest on Hole 3 (if you can call 25+ feet “close”).  No one hit the 7th green, and Egbert did the “Walk of Shame” on the 12th.  That left the 17th worth three skins.  Of course, Bruce G couldn’t pass up such a delectable opportunity, and thus he won all four closest skins.  Has that ever happened before?  Why, yes it has!
