Updated Handicaps – Money List

A few notes from the outgoing Fairness Specialist.

Skins:   Back in the beginning it was perceived that skins favoured the high handicappers.  It doesn’t.  The biggest positive of skins is that if someone is having a bad day they are inclined to remain interested in the next hole because it matters.  Handicap manipulation can occur if the last couple holes don’t matter. Medal and Stableford players tend to throw in the towel if they start poorly.

White tees:  Back in 2009 there were 14 Santiburi members that played 25 or more times.  Of the 14 members there were 6 that had handicaps of 14 or less, 4 between 15 and 19, and 4 that had handicaps of 20 or more with the highest being 25.   Currently there is 1 member below 16, 4 members 17 – 19, 6 in the 20’s, and 3 in the 30’s.  In 2009 it made sense to play the blues.   The members have evolved into a group where several are struggling from the blues.  Perhaps it is time to change to having most if not all competitions from the white tees.

Handicaps:   There are 3 handicap systems used in the world (USGA, EGA and CONGU).  They all have their flaws.  None of them address the fact that Santiburi can play up to 4 strokes more difficult depending on the tee boxes used and the dampness of the rough and fairway. The purpose of handicaps is to try make a level playing field.   Everyone should have an equal chance to win money no matter what level of ability they possess.   Consideration should be given to those that frequently lose money.   We don’t want players leaving the group because they usually lose money.   That isn’t fun!   The USGA manual states that the Handicap Committee may adjust handicaps.  I adopted the title “Fairness Specialist” because I recognized that there is more to handicapping than just inputting scores and watching a computer spew out handicaps.   Computers don’t understand what is fair.

I never penalize someone for a good round or a streak of good rounds.   The handicap system does that well enough.   However during the past year or so I have routinely given 2 bonus shots for the following:

  • Anyone new that has never played or has limited experience at Santiburi. I have never found a visitor to exaggerate his handicap.   Lack of course knowledge is worth at least 2 strokes.
  • Anyone that has been out of town for 3 or more months. Almost all return “rusty”.
  • Anyone that has been losing on a regular basis that feels they need the extra help. Skins may not suit some golfer’s style of play.  It’s rare that this happens but there is a need to keep everyone happy.

Once any of the above manage 36+ points a couple times over a short period of time I take the bonus strokes away.

I find the Chiang Rai Golfers handicaps to be compatible with ours and accept their handicaps as they are.

In closing I would like to thank all the members (and former members) for their support this past 2 and a half years and hope you all support the new Fairness Specialist (Graham) as well.  Graham knows he can always count on me for help and advise.

It was a beautiful, sunny day but humid at Santiburi.  Caddie 911 wasn’t there for the humidity test.  There was a huge rain cloud that opened up shortly after finishing.   There were four members and one friend, Colin.  The course was in excellent condition but the 18th green hasn’t been draining well during rainstorms.  It appears that they may be setting up a temporary green.   If that happens it usually takes them 3 months to get the new green completed.

Results — Mon July 3rd — updated handicaps — Santiburi July rates

An overcast sky and a light breeze made it a great day for golf.  The fairways are healing nicely and the greens are good.    For the month of July the green fee at Santiburi is 1000 baht + 300 baht caddie fee every day including weekends.

There were 6 Santiburi Members and 2 Friends (Jim and his friend, Robert) for another white tee competition.   For the first time a closest to the pin competition had to be split.  We had to pull out the measuring tape and found that both 5Points and BruceG were 239 inches from hole #7.   As usual BruceG was dominant on the par 3’s winning the 12th and 17th as well.   Leo had won the 3rd.  5Points won the stableford and the most money with 42 points (gross 92).  It was his best round since March when he had a 90 also in a white tee competition.  Much to Jim’s surprise it wasn’t another “donation day” and he will be leaving town in a few days with 190 baht of our money.

Santiburi Members and Friends play every Monday, Thursday and Saturday.  Please be at the golf course by 8:15 AM.

Chiang Rai Golfers are at Waterford tomorrow and Thursday at Happy City.  Both days 8:30 AM.

Another perfect day for golf.   Overcast but no real threat of rain.   Unfortunately it was “Maintenance Monday” at the course.   The 6th hole fairway was being cored and sanded. They are only doing one or two fairways every week so the first couple will be back to normal soon.   Greens #10 to #14 were also cored and sanded with the final 4 holes expected to be done before the end of the day.

There were 5 Santiburi Members and 2 Friends (John and Judy).

Closest to the pins — #3 — no one,  #7 — 5Points (39′),  #12 — 5Points (15′),  #17 — Graham (30′)

The stableford was won the the newbie John with his 38 points.  Leo was second with 37 points blowing it with blobs on the last 2 holes.  The big money winner on the strength of his par 3 performance was 5Points who had the lowest stableford score.

Again it was hot and steamy at Santiburi.  The course is in good condition, with the greens and fairways near perfect.   They have started to cut the rough so the scores are better.
There were 4 Santiburi members today and 1 Friend (Will) playing the skins format.
Closest to the pins:  #3 — no one,  #7 — Leo did the walk of shame 3-putting from 25′ and blowing 4 skins in the process.  #12 — Graham (17′),  #17 — Leo (23′)
Graham was the big winner as he played a very steady round with 41 points picking up 4 skins on #9, 1 on #10 and 4 on #12.  Egbert playing his last round with us until October had another good round with 38 points.  5Points won 6 skins with his par on #18.

Another very hot morning.  There were 5 Santiburi Members — 4 competed in the skins.   5Points is away on a mission but Marc is back.  We were the only ones on the course and got around in four hours.   The handicaps are certainly up because the rough is still very difficult and costing everyone strokes.  The heat certainly wasn’t making it any easier either (37 degrees when we finished).

Closest to the pins #3-+ #7 – no one,  #12 — Leo (46′),  #17 — BruceG (6′).  The skins for the 3rd to 8th hole were pushed.  Egbert who had 6 points in the first 8 holes won the 9th with a bogey (for 3 pts).  9 points in 9 holes and 7 skins.   German efficiency for you.  He was the big money winner as he bogeyed the 14th to get the half with Leo’s par, bogeyed the 15th to get the half with Graham’s par and won the 16th with his bogey for 5 more skins.  Leo won the stableford with 31 points, BruceG was second with 29.

Again another great day for golf.   The maintenance guys were out before us but their work was not really noticeable.  The greens are still very fast and true.

There were 6 Santiburi Members today to bid farewell to Brian aka Juppy aka Jollydinger.   He will be back probably in November.  Due a little congestion on the first tee we started on the 10th.

Closest to the pins:  #12 — Leo,   #17 — Brian,  #3 — BruceG   #7 — no one.   It should be noted that BruceG was the closest to the pin on both #12 and #17 but did the “walk of shame” on both.

The stableford was won by Bruce K (who was sugar free today).  He was also the only money winner.   Brian came in 2nd.

Next rounds are the usual Thursday, Saturday and Monday.  Please be at the course by 8:15 AM.

Updated handicaps:    Brian up 1 to 24, BruceG up 1 to 6, 5Points up 1 to 26   The handicaps are up probably due to the deep rough making it a little more difficult this past 2 weeks.

Today was the day following the conclusion of the Singha Masters, and All-Thailand Tour professional golf tournament held annually at Santiburi Golf Club.  The course management had been preparing the course all year for this tournament, and the course conditions were the best we have seen in a long time.  That said, the rough was much longer than normal (especially around the sand traps), the greens were fast, and the course played much more difficult than usual.

Because of the great, pro-level conditions, we sent out wider invitations and encouraged many from the greater Chiang Rai golf community to join us.  We had a great turnout, with nine members (5Points, Leo, Graham, Les, Merv, Peter, Bruce G, Bruce K, and Brian) and six friends (Rob, John F., Mark W., Rodney, Ross F., and Scott).  Since we had 14 or more playing, we decided to separate into two flights, with eight low handicappers competing against each other, and the seven higher handicappers facing off among themselves.  All players competed together for the closest-to-the-pin prizes on each par-3 hole.

 Closest to the pins:  #3 — Leo,  #7 — BruceG,  #12 — Peter,  #17 John F

The high handicap stableford winner with the best score of the 2 groups was Brian with 38 points.  Merv and BruceK split the 2nd money with 35 points each.   The low handicap winners were BruceG and JohnF each with 35 points.  The biggest money winner with 7 skins and a profit of 380 baht was JohnF.

It was much cooler than the past couple weeks.  There had been a bit of rain around 4 am which cleared the air somewhat.  The course is in great condition with near perfect greens and fairways with a lot of roll.   The rough is a different story.   The balls are getting harder to find and hacking out of the rough can in some cases be a real challenge.

There were 7 Members and 1 Friend —  Colin

Closest to the pins —  #3 — BruceG (55′),  #7 — 5Points,  #12 — Brian (15′),  #17 — Leo (10′) .   BruceG did the walk of shame on the 7th.

Leo won the stableford with 40 points (only one par for the day but 4 birdies).  BruceG gave himself a good talking to after his 24 points on Saturday and managed to come 2nd today with 39 points. Leo was the big money winner with 7.5 skins and a 350 baht profit — and a handicap cut of 2 strokes.

Next rounds at Santiburi:     Thursday (30th), Saturday (1st), Monday (3rd) — Please be at the course by 8:15 AM.

Chiang Rai Golfers are at Waterford:  Tuesday and Thursday @ 8:30.

Les had us over to his place for his birthday.  There was plenty of food and beer and everyone had a good time.

5Points has decided it would be better if the Community Cup were later in the year when more of the members are in town.
