6 Members and 1 Friend (Robert) played today.   The day started reasonably cool, got quite hot and then at the end cloud cover came over and it wasn’t so bad.   Once again it was Maintenance Monday.   The last 9 greens were in the process of being sanded.   All in all the members weren’t really bothered by the maintenance and just considered it an inconvenience.   We know that eventually they will get the mold out of the greens and the greens will once again be perfect.

Closest to the pins:

#3 — Les  (15′),   #7 –BruceG (28′),   #12 — BruceG (12′),   #17 — Leo (2′)

The stableford was won by BruceG (39), followed by Les (35).

Peter surprised everyone by not hitting 2 in the water on the 18th.  In fact it was the highlight of his poor day.   A birdie!.

Overcast skies and light rain greeted 4 members on the first tee but we decided to try our luck.
A team game was the order of the day, Peter and Bruce vs Les and Graham for the high stakes of 100 baht each.
The team game was best score wins but if halved the next best score decides winner, if the same the hole is pushed.
By the time we had reached the 4 tee the light showers departed only to be replaced by high humidity and glimpses of sun.
The game was close but on the back 9 Les and Graham could not reel the others in and by the 17th  with 3 down the game was conceded.
The highlight of the day was Peter keeping up with tradition and quacking twice on the 18th.

There has been no rain at the course for at least 48 hours and the course is very playable as you can see from most of the scores.  We played preferred lies on the fairways today but it really wasn’t necessary.   In fact, the sign indicated that carts were allowed off the cart paths today.  There was a nice cloud cover and a light breeze which made the day almost pleasant.   7 Members and 1 Friend (Chuck) showed up to enjoy the morning.

“A rainy day at Santiburi plus a police competition”

3 intrepid, hardy members, BruceG, Les and Peter turned up at 8 am, (all hardy Celts and it will be noted later about some other members.) The start was delayed until 8.45 due to some rain.  We decided to play 50,50,50 baht best stableford front 9, back 9 and overall.

The rain held off mostly for the front 9 and some holes it was dry. As we reached the turn the rain got somewhat heavier and now we were caught up in the police competition making the back 9 very slow going.

Now as you all might be thinking what happened to the other members today, well our American cousin was back in the USA so his absence was acceptable, but as for our antipodean members, they showed their true hardy selves by remaining firmly indoors and rumour has it, they were seen wearing pink pussy hats and picking out new curtains in the local Home Depot store while their wife’s were at home cutting the grass.

Anyway back to the more important issue about golf, the front 9 was won by BruceG on 16 pts, Les and Peter on 14.  The back 9 was also very close and coming down the 17th we were all within a point of each other and by this time there was a strong face wind and rain meeting us on the tee. Peter and Les bogeyed and BruceG wiped the hole which meant going to 18, Les and Peter had a 2 point lead over BruceG on the back 9 and we were all square on the match.

After some fantastic water play by Peter, his 2nd hit land and bounced in and his 4th ended up on the far side of the water near the green and near the water, after bouncing out and we will never know how.  Bruce and Les made it to the green the usual route only to look back at Peter balancing on tip toes trying to hit the green for 5 (oh to be left handed at this point).  Anyway enough of trying to make this sound fantastic, Bruce and Les made it in the hole to share the back 9 score and Peter had a 6 ft putt to also tie the back 9 but alas his valiant effort failed to find the bottom of the cup so he lost the back 9 as well.

Results:

BruceG won the front 9, BruceG & Les split the back 9,  BruceG won the overall

For the day:  Bruce up 225,  Les down 75,  Peter down 150

After much discussion in the clubhouse on the failure of some members to show up it was agreed that we would all try again on Monday.  However the back 9 greens are due to be hollow cored and sanded starting on Monday.  So there may be some complaints about course condition again.  And hopefully the new curtains in the antipodean houses are looking good.

A partly cloudy day which became very hot at end.  There were 4 members –Andrew, Bruce G, Les and Graham and 2 friends Will and Bastiaan at Santiburi.   The course is currently undergoing a lot of work, some parts of fairways cored and sanded,  greens being sanded etc but still playable despite what some people have deemed a goat track.
The OOD ( Andrew )  decided that we would play a 3 man team game with best 2 scores counting.
Leo joined us for the back 9 to test out his back and seemed to play OK  (14 points in 9 holes).  Good to see him again.

“This, too, shall pass…”

Ah, what a difference a day makes.  When we last looked upon the fortunes of our intrepid SMAF fivesome of Les, Graham, Andrew, Bruce G, and 5Points, Les and Graham were the big winners and 5Points was grateful for his meager 18 points.  But, this, too shall pass away.  Today, the weather was overcast with a hint of rain, but the rain held off until the fivesome putted out on 18.  At least one member of the group was thinking about going home at the turn, but everyone gamely stayed with it until the end.  Perhaps getting a birdie and winning six skins helped make the decision to stay.  The only constant was Graham, who came in second place in the stableford and took the lion’s share of the skins.  Everyone else pretty much swapped places from last Thursday.  We played our regular skins game.  Here are the results:

Stableford

  • Winner:  5Points (36 points)
  • Runner-up:  Graham (33 points)

Dennis

Photo from the Canada Cup Golf Tournament — July 14, 2017

Dennis was a long time resident of Chiang Rai.   In recent years he didn’t play much golf but those that got to play with him always had an enjoyable day.  A true gentleman that will be missed  by those that knew him.

Services for Dennis were held at Wat Chetuphon in Denha on Saturday, August 9.   The following photos were taken at the funeral.
