Announcement:  Bernie Memorial Golf Tournament, Tuesday, February 27, 2018, 9:00 AM, Waterford Valley.  The Bernie Memorial Golf Tournament is an annual golf tournament, originally sponsored by Ray Terry (who purchased the trophy) to honor the memory of Bernie Moody, an avid Chiang Rai golfer who was very friendly, welcoming to all, and a big part of golf in Chiang Rai for many years.  Ray Terry has since also passed on to the great clubhouse in the sky, and the Bernie Memorial (along with the Tony Memorial) has become an annual event to honor the lives of all those Chiang Rai golfers who are no longer with us.  The tournament is being sponsored by Chiang Rai Golfers this year.  Several SMAF members are planning to participate, including 5Points, Graham, Bruce G, Andrew, and Paul and Young Park, among others.  If you are interested, please email your entry to by Friday so a draw can be sent out at the weekend.

Today was beautiful, sunny and warm — perfect for golf.  The course is looking very nice.  The greenskeeping staff is clearly putting the final touches on the course for the Singha Open professional tournament, which will be held March 22-25, 2018.  There are a few sand traps which are being renovated, and there is some sand on greens and tee boxes, but in general, the course is starting to come into its pristine pre-tournament state.  The rough is getting longer, and conditions will get better and better over the next month.

Today we had eleven players and 10 participants (all members) in our regular skins game.  All played from the blue tees, except for Young, who played from the red tees.

Scores were generally better, perhaps because of the awesome course conditions and dry fairways, which had a lot of run.  Everyone was in the 30’s (except for Graham, who scored 40 points to win the Stableford top prize.  5Points, Bruce G, and Paul each scored 39 points to share the runner-up prize.  No one won the closest-to-the-pin prize on Hole 3, but Brian got two skins for his closest on Hole 7, Bruce G won Hole 12 (Les was only half a foot farther out on the opposite side of the hole), and Graham took the honors on Hole 17 (about 3 feet from the pin; Andrew was about 3.5 feet out; both birdied).

Save the date (March 26, 2018)!  A tentative plan is in the works for a Chiang Rai community golf tournament, sponsored by SMAF.  March 26th is the Monday after the Sunday final round of the Singha Open professional golf tournament.  The course will be in pro-tournament form, with long rough and Sunday pin placements.  We will play like the pros and have a chance to win a trophy, just like they do!  We currently have five tee times (accommodating up to 20 players)  and could probably get more if the demand is there.  We are putting together the details and will have an announcement soon!

Here are today’s results:

  • Winner:  Graham (40 Points)
  • Runner(s)-Up:  5Points, Bruce G, and Paul (39 Points each)

  • Hole 3:  No One
  • Hole 7:  Brian (x2)

The day started out looking like rain, but it never materialized.  The course had had some rain over night, however, and was a little muddy in a few places — nothing substantial.

We had seven participants:  six members and one friend, Ralph.  We played our regular skins game off the blue tees (Ralph, white tees).

No one was putting up highlights for ESPN sportscenter.  Egbert won the stableford and Bruce G came in second.  Four of the group — more than half — tied at a measly 30 Stableford points.  Egbert edged Bruce G for closest on the 3rd hole.  Bruce got the 7th and the 17th.  Graham hit a nice shot to take the 12th away from Ralph.

There was some excitement between 5Points and Bruce G.  They made their normal side bet — 100 baht on the total stableford score, with the proviso that if either score was below 30 points, the bet is off.  After 5Points skidded to a mere 10 points on the front nine, it appeared the bet would be off!  5Points, never one to let himself get off the hook so easily, pressed Bruce G on the back 9, with the cut-off 15 points.  Bruce G accepted the bet, but then immediately reeled off 5 bogies for one point each, while 5Points got his game into action.  It turned out both bets were on, with 5Points scoring exactly 30 (20 points on the back).  Bruce G scored 16 points to lose the back nine but win the over-all.  No blood!  5Points reported later that if he had simply missed his last putt, he would have won the back nine and had no contest on the overall, meaning +100 baht for him.  But integrity and love for the game and the spirit of sportsmanship, yada yada yada, won the day and he tapped in his final putt to score 30.

Here are the results:

  • Runner-Up:  Bruce G (34 Points)

There were six participants today:  five members and one friend, Will.  The cool, dry season arrived, delivering one of the most beautiful golf days of the year, with a sunny, dry day, fast greens and great course conditions.  We played our normal skins game from the blue tees.

It was sunny with a chance of drones!  Yes, drones.  As the first group  prepared to putt on the ninth green, a drone appeared overhead.  It distracted some members of the party (notably 5Points) and some were heard to say that they missed a putt because of the unusual sound and the reality of a drone hovering overhead.  Aren’t those subject to licensing requirements?

On the tenth tee, it was clear that the drone was being operated by a golfer from a large group who were either in the restaurant or gathered near the pro shop before teeing off on the first hole.  After 5Points screamed unbecomingly at the operator to land his <discouraging word> drone, the operator finally realized he was distracting the golfers (who would have thought?) and brought the offending item down from the sky.  5Points was heard to mumble something about “black helicopters” and eye the sky nervously for the rest of the day.  Ironically, despite his whinging incessantly, he played better on the back nine than he did on the front.

The drones had no effect on Bruce G, who shot an even par 72 and hammered the rest of the field, except for Will, who put up a respectable 40 points.

Here are the results:

  • Winner:  Bruce G (43 points)
  • Runner-up:  Will (40 points)

Today was a perfect day of golf.  Good weather, and the course in fine nick.  We had five participants:  four friends, and one friend (Robert).  We played our standard skins game.  Les started on the first hole and pretty much won everything, including hitting into the flower bed on 7 and taking a free drop, and then putting it to 2.5 feet to win five skins (Ouch!)  The rest of us just watched as Les romped to victory.

The weather was not especially good today, but it was not bad enough to prevent us from playing.  We had a light sprinkling of rain virtually the entire round, getting increasingly heavier as we finished, but never enough to require more than a temporary deployment of either the umbrella, the rain cover or both.

The course was fairly soft and the course was under cart-path-only status, so we played lift-clean-and-place in the fairway.  We had seven players today:  four Members and three Friends (Ross F. from Chiang Rai Golfers; Colin, and Andrew’s friend from Australia Garry).   This was Colin’s last day until March, as he is returning to Japan to teach school.

Colin went out with a bang, including reeling off three straight birdies (holes 3-5), grabbing two of the four closest-to-the-pin prizes, and winning the most skins (6.5).  Andrew had the best Stableford score (36 points) but still managed to lose money (-40 Baht).  Both Marc and 5Points tied for the next-to-lowest Stableford score (29 points) but won multi-skin holes at critical moments (5Points won 4 skins on hole 12, and Marc won 5 skins on hole 18) to end up winning 100 Baht each.

Here are the results:

  • Hole 3:  Colin
  • Hole 7:  No one (Bruce G did the walk of shame)
  • Hole 12:  Bruce G x 2 (redeeming his walk of shame…  it is rumored that Ross F did the walk of shame on 12.)
  • Hole 17:  Colin

Another steamy day at Santiburi.  The greenskeeper staff did small-tine aeration on the front nine greens in front of our group, and spread topsoil on the greens behind us.  The aeration was virtually unnoticeable.  The sanding will likely be unnoticeable by next Thursday, when we play again.  The course was in excellent condition.

We had seven players:  Five members and two friends, Colin and Jeff.  Jeff and Peter are returning to Pattaya shortly, so this is Jeff’s last round with us.  It was a pleasure meeting you and playing with you, Jeff!  Please join us again when you are in town!  Peter will return in three weeks or so.

We played individual skins.  Here are the results:

Today Santiburi remained in great condition due to the course management’s decision to postpone scheduled green coring/sanding until after Sunday’s Singha Amateur tournament.  The weather was sunny, hazy, and very hot!  Today we had five members (5Points, Graham, Bruce G, Brian, and Jockey John) and five friends, all from Chiang Rai Golfers group (known affectionately by some as “The Dark Side”) (Rob, Neil, Ross, Scott, and Rodney).
Since we had five SMAF and five CRG, we played a team game, SMAF vs CRG.  Each team member played a singles match against one opposing team player. Winning the match awarded one point for  the players team.  A tie awarded one-half point to each team. The team with the most win points would win the prize pool, to which each participant donated 100 baht.
Here are the results:
Match 1:  Rob (14) v. Bruce G (5).  Bruce won 2&1.
Match 2:  Neil (20) v. Graham (20).  All Square
Match 3:  Ross (21) v. Brian (23).  Brian won 3&1.
Match 4:  Scott (20) v. Jockey (22).  Jockey won 1 up.
Match 5: Rodney (32) v. 5Points (25).  Rodney won 2&1.
Final score:  CRG 1.5   —   SMAF 3.5
Everyone stated they enjoyed the format as a good change and we should seek future opportunities to get the two groups together on a periodic basis.
Next events:
Saturday, 29 April.  5Points and Brian plan to play.  8:15 show up, 8:30 tee off, Santiburi.
Sunday, 30 April.  Singha Amateur.  12 noon shotgun start.
Monday, 1 May.  We have 8:30 tee time but few may show due to Singha Amateur previous day.

Results — Saturday Mar 18th

It was a noon tee off today due to the juniors competition this morning.   It was fairly warm but there was a nice breeze as well as overcast skies for most of the afternoon.  We weren’t held up by anyone in front of us.   It was pointed out by one of the caddies today that Santiburi is allowing the rough to grow for the Singha competition April 4th-9th.

There were 7 Members and 1 Friend —  Colin (who is back with us for a couple weeks)

Closest to the pins —  #3 — BruceG,  #7 — Colin,  #12 — no one,  #17 — BruceG

BruceG and Leo shared the stableford win with 41 points.   BruceG shot level par for the day.  Jockey John had caddie issues and failed to complete the back 9.

Next rounds at Santiburi:     Monday (20th) — Please be at the course by 8:15 AM.  Thursday (23rd) — Please be at the course by 11:40 AM.

Chiang Rai Golfers are at Santiburi on Tuesday, 8:30 AM.   Apparently the “social” golfers find playing with us on Monday or Thursday not an option.  They are also at Happy City on Thursday at 8:30 AM.

Darryl has left us for about 6 months.  Marc is expected to be away for 2 months.  Peter is leaving for a couple weeks as well.

Bernie Memorial Tournament results

It came down to a countback against Bruce Guthrie and Leo but Leo’s stronger back nine was enough to take out the Bernie Memorial Tournament at Waterford Golf Course on Sunday (March 12).   There was a total of 18 golfers which included 6 Santiburi members.

The scoring for the top spots was close in beautiful weather tempered by a strong breeze, with Bruce and Leo locked on 38, followed  by John (‘Five Points’) on 37 and Keith Holt (36).
It was a great showing from Keith, particularly since he hasn’t played since January.

Nearest the pin on the par threes went to Scott Bieber on the third, Bruce G on the 11th and Keith H on the 15th. Nobody hit the 6th.
There was a draw for best score on six mystery holes and the winners were Rob, Jim, Leo, Mark, Five Points and Bastiaan.
The special Cruel Hand of Fate award went to Will Farris who showed great perseverance and good humour despite a sudden unexpected drop in form and a ton of bad luck that saw him wipe eight of the 18 holes.
Rob Parish paid tribute to Bernie and the others we remember in this tournament, and everybody raised their glasses in a toast.
Will F recalled  Bernie with his little stool marching down the fairway and parking himself near the green while he waited for the others to hit up.
Special mention to John Upex who donated a box of balls and Rob who also threw in a sleeve of Srixons for the prize table.
Also thanks to Sara whose painting of Santiburi Golf  Course made first prize so special and Neil Horton, the tourament’s previous winner, who spent hours refurbishing what had become a rather tattered trophy.

Chiang Rai Golfers

Chiang Rai Golfers is the other golf group in Chiang Rai.   The main difference between them and the Santiburi Members is that they prefer to play at Waterford or Happy City golf courses where it is cheaper.

There are several golfers in Chiang Rai that play with both groups.  Chiang Rai Golfers believe as we do that “All Are Welcome” and we encourage all golfers to play where they choose.   Both groups get together for community competitions about 5 times a year.

They can be contacted at and can be found on Facebook as Chiang Rai Golfers.
