It was another perfect day for golf.   Today we had 8 members members including Steve who has returned and 1 friend, Jim, who is also back for a while.   The skins computer battery went dead before the results were announced and those that participated today will have to settle up next time.

Brian won the stableford (for the 3rd time in a row) only this time he had to share it with Leo.  Both with 38 points.

Finally a golf video that properly explains the golf swing.   Disclaimer — Watching golf videos can screw up your game.   The writer as well as the management of this blog do not accept any responsibility if it should happen to you.

Where is BruceG you ask?   BruceG is in India.   It seems they have heard about his deluxe weather app and have offered him millions of rupees for it.   There is great demand for the app because they need to know if it is a good day to take out their flying carpets.

I was just reminded that we did play golf today.   Perfect weather for golf.

Today we had 6 members members including Doc.  Unlike Thursday when the blue tees were waaaay waaaay back today they were as forward as possible.   There was very little difference between the blues and whites.   Hence the better scores.

Brian won the stableford (again).   This time with 42 points.   Marc also had a good day finishing second.

It was a bit chilly on the first tee today but it warmed up nicely.   Hopefully the cold snap is gone for good.   There were a few greens that were lightly sanded as the greenskeeper is trying to get the mould out.

Today we had ten members including Doc who did not participate in the skins game.

BruceG started slowly today with 6 points on the first 6 holes.  Then his game mysteriously came back and he was as sharp as ever getting 4 birdies.  Graham was the stableford winner with 39 points.   Marc, Young and BruceG were joint second.

Again a very cool morning but unlike Thursday it did warm up a bit.

Today we had eight members including Doc who did not participate in the skins game.

It was Young’s husband Paul that played very well today.   He borrowed a putter from Bruce and it got him 2 birdies and the top stableford prize with 40 pts.  Young was the best of the rest with 33 pts.

A very cool (18 Degrees C or less) threatening rain that never developed.  The course remains in good condition, except for the aforementioned turf disease, which is progressing but being treated, and which doesn’t really affect play.

Today we had ten participants (including Doc, who did not participate in the skins game), all members.  We played our normal skins game from the blue tees. with Leo and Darryl playing from the white tees, and Young playing from the red tees.  Egbert joined us after a brief trip to the outer-world — welcome back, Egbert!

Young “Se-Ri” Park again had a great round — her third or fourth 40-point game in a row.  She won the top stableford prize.  Marc came in second with 39.  Darryl won the most skins, despite a middling round — he won at the right times, winning the third hole for three skins and the fifth hole for two, as well as a closest-to-the-pin on Hole 3.

Speaking of closest-to-the-pins, in addition to Darryl’s closest on Hole 3…  Paul hit the green on Hole 7, but did the Walk of Shame.  However, he redeemed himself on Hole 12 to win two skins.  Leo’s highlight of the day was a closest prize on Hole 17.

Here are the results:

Stableford:

  • Winner:  Young “Se-Ri” Park (40 Points)
  • Runner-up:  Marc (39 Points)

The recent rains have apparently caused the emergence of some kind of turf disease at Santiburi.  The greens and some of the fairways are showing distinct signs of brown, dying grass, and there are many bare patches showing telltale black-colored soil underneath.  The same thing happened last year, and the greenskeeping team leapt into action, solving the problem within a couple of weeks, and they will probably do the same this year.  It really doesn’t affect play at the moment.

Today we had five participants, all members.  We decided to play medal (stroke) play from the white tees.  It apparently is called “stroke” play because the mere mention of it causes participants to lose feeling in one side and to slur their speech, and play like they have severe medical problems.  Leo declared himself disqualified after only one hole.  5Points should have followed suit but doggedly stayed in the game.  Perhaps his side bet with Bruce G had something to do with it.

Peter was playing pretty well, however, shooting one over par for the first nine holes, and Graham and Bruce G were in the mix.

At the turn, here was the situation:

Player H’Cap Gross Score Net Score
5Points 28 57 43
Graham 19 44 34
Leo 17 50 42
Peter 12 37 31
Bruce 5 39 36

On the back nine, the players reversed roles a bit.  5Points reeled off a gross 46, which is good for him, and 11 strokes better than his front nine.  He ended up achieving a tie at net 75 with Bruce G, who slipped two strokes on his back nine, so their side bet ended with “no blood”. Peter and Graham both shot back nine 46’s, and they tied as winners of the stroke event, with scores of net 71 each.

Road Trip

We will be celebrating going into the 4th year of Santiburi Members and Friends by taking a road trip to play Mae Moh.   It takes about 3 hours to drive from Chiang Rai to Mae Moh/Lampang.

Schedule:

Tuesday, Feb 6th — A few members will be taking their wives to Lampang and spending the night.

Wednesday, Feb 7th — Most members will be leaving Chiang Rai in the morning and meeting up with those that left Feb 6th at Mae Moh.  Tee times start at 1 PM.

Thursday, Feb 8th — We have tee times starting at 9 AM.   Lunch will be in the clubhouse and then most will be returning to Chiang Rai.

Hotels:

2 or 3 golfers  (and their wives)  will be staying at the Wiengthong Hotel.   It is 1360 baht per day (superior room) including breakfast.   The deluxe room is apparently exactly the same — a little more money and on a higher floor.   It is a good place for the wives to hang out while we play golf.

http://www.lampangwiengthong.co.th/index.htm

Leo recommends the Hop Inn.   This is a new hotel chain in Thailand.  Very clean, standard rooms, good wifi, no breakfast.  For a place to sleep and shower it is very adequate.  Price 650 baht per night.

http://www.hopinnhotel.com/hotel/lampang/

Of course, if you prefer somewhere else feel free to stay there.

Cost of golf:

Mae Moh green fee is 500 baht + 200 caddie.   Optional (but recommended) carts are 300 baht sharing.  (Total 1000 baht per day)

We will be playing our usual skins game both days.  Participation in the skins game is optional.

As always everyone is welcome to play with us.

If you are planning to join us please reply by email as soon as possible so we can get a handle on the numbers.   Also, let us know if you have transportation or if you require transportation.   If you are bringing your wife let us know that as well.   Email : basilpuppydog@hotmail.com

It had rained during the night, and the day dawned heavily overcast.  However, as tee time approached, the rains held off.  As we began to tee off, the rains began, but they were intermittent throughout the day with nothing that necessitated actual play stoppage.

Today we had eleven members, including Doc (who did not play in the skins game) and Marc.  We played our regular skins game from the blue tees (Darryl played white and Young played red).

It was deja vu all over again, as Young shot 40 stableford points to win the stableford competition, and Brian garnered 38 points for second place.    Les won the most skins, most notably winning four skins on Hole 13 with a four-point par.  Graham took three of the four closest-to-the-pin prizes, and Darryl took closest on Hole 17.

A cool, overcast day, perfect for golf.  The course remains in excellent condition, although the greens seemed a little slower than usual.

Today we had twelve participants – ten members and two friends, Mickey and Dar.  Les has returned after a short absence — welcome back, Les!

We played our regular skins game from the blue tees.  Leo and Darryl played from the white tees, and Young and Dar played from the red tees.

Young had a banner day, winning the stableford competition (40 points), the most skins (5.50), and the most money (410 baht).  Brian came in second on the stableford, skins, and money.  The closest to the pins were spread out, with Leo taking hole #3, Darryl taking hole #7 (5Points did the walk of shame from 30 feet), Brian on hole #12, and Les on hole #17.

Many SMAF members took part in the Chiang Rai Golfers-sponsored Captain’s Cup on January 2nd at Waterford, including Bruce G, Leo, Andrew, Peter, and Brian, and well as friends  Mickey and Dar.  In all 29 players participated — it was well organized and all had a great time.

We have tentatively arranged our annual trip to Mae Moh golf course in Lampang.  Mark your calendars for February 7 – 8!  We will put out a spearate blog post when all the particulars are nailed down.
