For our American friends, Happy Thanksgiving Day!

The sky threatened rain all day but it never arrived.  The course is in pretty good condition. Although all greens have been lightly sanded, and several of the back nine tee boxes have had a good measure of sand laid down on them, there was generally no effect on play.

We had six participants today:  five members and one friend (Uli).  All played from the blue tees.  We split into two threesomes and played split sixes, with the one best stableford score counting as the team score for the first six holes, the sum of the two best scores for the next six holes, and the sum of all three scores for the final six holes.  The bet was 50 baht per player for each six and another 50 baht for the total, or 200 baht per player.

Team 5Points consisted of 5Points, Graham, and Bruce G.  Team Egbert consisted of Egbert, Brian, and Uli.

Team Egbert edged Team 5Points by one point on the first six, and beat them by three on the second six, to take a commanding lead.  Team 5Points won the final six by three, but that was not enough to win the total score, as Team Egbert remained ahead by one.  Thus, the members of Team Egbert each won 100 baht.

A warm, sunny day at Santiburi.  The back nine greens have been lightly sanded, but it had no discernible effect on play.

We had a large contingent today — 12 players.  There were six members (including Graham, who has been recovering from a dog bite — Graham chose not to participate in the skins but he did shoot stableford 38, so he must be feeling better!) and six friends (The Aussie trio of Rob, Peter, and Mike; Ralph; frequent returnee David; and a new friend, Uli.)  We played our normal skins game, with all but Brian, Leo and Ralph playing from the blue tees.

Leo had a wonderful round, shooting even par 36 on the front nine, and three birdies on the day, to finish with a gross 76 and 45 stableford points.  Needless to say, he won the “lion’s” share of the money.  5Points came in second, shooting 21 + 21 = 42 Stableford points — the best round he’s had in at least two months.  Brian came in second on the money list.  The closest-to-the-pin prizes were taken by four separate players:  Mike, Uli, Egbert, and, of course, Leo, who came darn close to getting his third hole-in-one on 17.

It was really great to have such a large group and to engage in fun, friendly golf.  It is an excellent feature of the high season when folks start trickling back in and we get a large group together for golfing fun.

Rob, Peter and Mike will be playing their last round at Santiburi, this trip, on Wednesday, before returning to Bangkok and then back home.  Several of us have decided to play with them on Wednesday, at 8:30 AM (same time as normal.  Those of us who have less flexible schedules will be playing on Thursday, our normal day.  Some may play on both Wednesday and Thursday!  All are welcome on either day.  Please see below for the details.

Another beautiful day at Santiburi, which remains in excellent condition.  Today we had seven participants: three members (including the returning Brian) and four friends (Ralph, and the Aussie trio of Rob, Peter and Mike).

We played our normal skins game.  Brian, Leo and Ralph played from the white tees.

Bruce G was missed.  “Missed” is the operative term, because only one person hit any par-3 green today (5Points, hole 3).  The rest were, well, missed.  So only 22 skins were awarded.  Bruce G could have made big bucks today!  Too bad…

Although 5Points and Ralph only scored 27 stableford points, they were in the winner’s column.  Ralph and Peter both won the top money (130 baht), and 5Points won 60 baht.  Ralph won four skins on hole 17 with his bogey, and 5Points won 3 skins on hole 7 with his par.  It proves one doesn’t have to post the best score to win in skins!

Peter and Mike tied to take the stableford prize with 36 points each>

Welcome back, Brian!

The conditions at Santiburi are exceptional right now, with firm fairways and great greens, just spectacular.  The weather was perfect, too — a sunny, moderately warm day.

Today we had eight competitors: four members and four friends (Ralph, who is visiting long-term; and the Australian trio of Mike, Rob, and Peter.  These three travel to Thailand about twice per year for a three- or four-week golf odyssey in Pattaya, bangkok, and/or Chiang Rai/Chiang Mai.  We’ve seen them at Santiburi before and invited them to join our group for play when they came back.  They remembered and join us for the first time today.   They plan to play on Saturday and Monday too.  The three were a great addition to our group!  We look forward to playing with them in the next week and whenever they return to the area.

We played our normal skins game.  Leo, Ralph, and Rob played form the white tees, while the rest of the group played from the blue tees.

Les was on his game today, scoring 37 stableford points to win the day and even edging Bruce G on 17 by approximately a foot to take two skins for the closest-to-the-pin prize.  Les won the most skins as well, with 8.5 skins.  Bruce G came in second on the stableford, but Aussie Rob came in second on the money list, winning six skins.

Another beautiful day in paradise.  Weather sunny and not too hot.  Santiburi is in fine condition.

Today we had five participants – four members and one friend, Ralph.  We played our normal skins game, with Ralph and Leo playing white tees, and the rest playing from the blue tees.

Ralph had a tough morning, but after the first nine he caught fire and tied for the best back nine score of 19 points.  He also chipped in to a back pin from off the front of the green on hole 15 to save bogey and win the hole.

Bruce G must have caught a virus, or perhaps decided to “drop anchor” since 5Points declined to bet with him.  Who knows, but shooting a gross score of 90 is a rarity.  Maybe 5Points will be suckered back in next Thursday.  Today might have been the best day for the bet, though.  Also uncharacteristically, Bruce failed to capture a single closest to the pin prize, leaving all four for Leo.  I guess playing from the white tees suits him!

Leo and Les tied for the best stableford score.

Another cool-season spectacular golf day — sunny but not too hot.  Santiburi is in fantastic condition.  We had four participants today – three members and one friend, Ralph.  We played a 50-baht Nassau form the white tees, the Scots against the Americans.  This time the Scots exacted their revenge, taking both nines and the total 18-hole score as well.  Bruce was down on the back nine at first but finished birdie-birdie-birdie to crush the Americans completely.  It was overkill, because Les scored well on both nines, shooting a total of 42 Stableford points, so the game was really already over by the time Bruce started his birdie blitz.

Here are the scores:

  • Bruce G: 35 Points (Won 150 Baht) (78)
  • Les:  42 Points  (Won 150 Baht) (97)

A cool, overcast day — perfect for golf.  We had five participants:  three members and two friends, Ralph and his friend from Hawaii, Pat.  We played our standard skins game from the blue tees (Ralph played from the white tees).   All five of us blobbed the 18th hole, so there were only 24 skins awarded.  Afterwards, Pat graciously bought the party lunch.  Many thanks, Pat!  It was great to play with you, and we appreciate your kind gesture!

Bruce had little competition on the par 3 holes.  He missed Hole 3, but picked up two skins on Hole 7, and then was the only player to hit holes 12 and 17.  He took the top Stableford score and won the most skins as well.  However, Ralph won four skins on Hole 12, and two on hole 5, to come in second place money-wise.

A cool, overcast day — perfect for golf.  We had six participants:  five members, and one friend, Ralph.  At least he was our friend until he took all our money!  LOL  Just kidding, Ralph.  Ralph, who is a regular at Santiburi who visits Chiang Rai for long periods of time, shot his lowest back nine score ever — 47 (25 stableford points).

We played our regular skins game from the blue tees (except for Leo and Ralph, who played from the white tees.  Leo reported he had 12 pars and five blobs on the day, with 8 pars of the back nine.

On a sad note, Graham reported he could not make it because his dog had died.  It was to be expected as his dog, Layla, a beautiful golden retriever, had been doing very poorly.  It is sad to hear that she’s departed, but I’m sure she’s in a better place now.

A few months ago, the Santiburi pro shop staff touched base with us to let us know that there was a tournament scheduled for today, and acknowledged it.  Then, as the high season approached, we asked to make tee times through the high season, and the Santiburi proshop staff printed off all our scheduled tee times, once again confirming that there was a tournament at the course today.

I guess we forgot to put that in our calendar.

5Points showed up early for his morning constitutional and was surprised to see several cars in the parking lot already.  When he checked in at the pro shop they delivered the saad news:  No golf for SMAF today.  5Points scrambled to alert Graham and Leo, etc., and to make alternate arrangements.  Bottom line, a slightly smaller SMAF event did take place, but at Waterford Valley instead of Santiburi.

Four members participated:  5Points, Egbert, Les, and Bruce G.  They elected to play a 50-baht Nassau team game, Scots against the Rest of the World, best stableford score of the twosome counts as the team score. The condition of Waterford is really excellent right now — perhaps the best shape it has even been in, with all the rain this year and the fact it drains so well.  Firm fairways and fast greens.

5Points and Egbert got out to an early lead, with 5Points parring the first hole, and that lead held until the 8th hole, when Les and Bruce tied it up.  Unfortunately, the treacherous 9th beat everyone but Egbert, who eked out one point and won the front nine for his team.

The Scots struck back immediately, winning the first two holes on the back nine to go up two, but Egbert and 5Points bogied hole 12 to get a point back, and the Egbert’s par on Hole 13 got two points on the Scots.  Rest of World one up.  On Hole 14, the long uphill par 4, 5Points chipped from just off the cart path to within four feet, and made the putt for par.  Rest of World up three points.  That lead held to the 18th hole, and 5Points’ sandy par on 18 sealed the deal for good.

Final Results:

Scots (Les/Bruce G) scored 17 + 18 = 35 points (Lost (50 + 50 + 50) x 2 = 300)

Rest of World (5Points/Egbert) scored 18 + 23 = 41 points (Won (50 + 50 + 50) x 2 = 300)

Another beautiful day for golf.  Please be advised the high season rates are in effect at Santiburi:  Weekdays green fee B2,000; Weekends and Holidays:  B2,500.  Caddy Fee is B300 and Cart Fee is B600.  If you play with a member, we can get you a 20% discount on the green fee (Weekday B1,600; Weekends and Holidays B2,000).

Today we had five members.  We played our regular skins game from the blue tees, except Leo, who played from white tees.

Some people argue skins favors the low handicappers.  Some say it favors the high handicappers.  Our Money list seems to strongly indicate that it is random, and that low handicappers win more money than high handicappers because of their accuracy on the par 3’s and their ability to consistently put up good stableford scores.

Today was definitely a random day.  5Points, to be perfectly frank, had a difficult day of golf, scoring only 21 stableford points.  But in a five -ball, there are usually a lot of holes that are tied and get pushed to the next hole.  That is what happened for the first seven holes, a stretch during which 5Points scored exactly seven points.  On the seventh hole, it must be noted, Graham had a 2.5 foot putt to win seven skins.  But, sadly, he missed, and the hole was pushed again.  On the next hole, on his third shot, 5Points blindly stabbed at the ball yet again, and it soared beautifully to within 4 feet of the pin, stunning his competitors into a watery funk from which no one emerged to come within two shots.  Not to be outdone, 5Points MISSED his 4-footer, but his bogey was enough to win the hole outright and claim 8 skins.

5Points went on to demonstrate that he still had not a shred of golfing ability on tap today, but it didn’t matter because he still won more skins than anyone.  Hey, it’s better to be lucky than good.

Bruce G continues to put on quite a show for the crowd, shooting a three-over-par 75.

Graham regretfully won not a single skin.  Had he made the short putt, he would have won seven and 5Points would have won only two.  These are the small matters upon which major outcomes rest.
