3) Guest Post

The following was placed in the comments today.   It is well written and I feel it deserves to be a separate post.   Thank you Martin for your thoughts.

Hi All
Been reading about this matter and it is very disappointing to see the event occur. Being part of this group on and off, and then coming back to re-join when we return to Chiang Rai each year, I would like to think that we will be able to see all of our friends there and play in the great skins competition.
Being a current member of a golf club in Australia and playing strict competitions that include side bets etc I would like to make a comment about the ethics of the game. There are a couple players at my club who are known for trying to manipulate their handicap. Recently there was an instance of them doing just that in a round of golf, one of their playing partners reported them (which took courage) and the club had to act. That process did not reflect poorly on the person who reported them, it reflected poorly on the individual who believes that they have a right to behave in that manner and try to make a mockery of the ethics of the game – as well as the ethics of their playing partners.
In this instance, the same should be said. The issue lies with the individual who decided to behave in such a manner. The behavior disrespects the group as a whole and individually disrespects those who were involved in the side bet – irrespective of if it is within the rules of the side bet or not. At no stage should a person believe that it is ok to not play out the round with the intent to play appropriately and with some sort of effort. Picking up on a par 5 having hit just two shots is absurd and should be treated as absurd.
I see that the group has a Code of Conduct in place, that Code should be applied in this instance so that the integrity of the group is maintained. The group is bigger than that one individual member. If that member cannot come back to the group and indicate that they acknowledge what they did was disrespectful then they should not return to the group. No one else should have to feel that they need to leave the group as a result – that is certainly disappointing to me and I hope that the resolution lies in the group coming together to make that not the case.
I would agree that the group can, and probably should forgive, however the matter should not be forgotten and a repeat of it would truly spell the end for that person as there should be no tolerance for it moving forward.

Another sunny, very warm day with the course in excellent condition.  The rough is getting long, and the fairways and greens are near perfect.

We had 11 players today:  nine members, and two friends (“Jockey” John, a former member and long-time SMAF participant, and Ae, who came with Steve).  We played our normal skins game from the blue tees.  Jockey John decided not to participate in the skins game.  However, he shot 40 points, so he may join in with us on Thursday.  Leo and Steve played from the white tees.

Leo mentioned recently that historically, scores and handicaps start to come down this time of year, as the course begins to come up to perfection in the lead up to the Singha professional tournament.  Today’s scores certainly reflect that reality.  There were four Stableford scores in the 40’s (five if you count Jockey John’s 40), and four other scores greater than 35.  You had to be shooting fours if you wanted to be in the money.

Ae took the top Stableford spot with 45 points.  Steve came in second with 44 (he also won the most skins, with 6.83, garnering 433 baht).  Egbert came in third with 43 (he tied for second with 5Points in skins, with 4.00 skins and 150 baht).

Bruce got closest on Holes 2 and 7.  Leo took Hole 12, and Brian got hole 17.

Plans are starting to come together for the Community Cup, scheduled for March 26th, the day after the final round of the Pro tournament.  5Points contacted the course management, and they confirmed that the course setup for the Community Cup will be the same as the pros will be playing on Sunday, with the rough still long and the pin placements designed to force good shots.  More info to come shortly!

A warm, sunny, beautiful day for golf.  The course is in excellent condition and getting better.

Announcement:  Effective immediately, Santiburi Members and Friends will play the ball “down”; that is, no more “lift, clean and place” in the fairways.  As mentioned above, the course is in excellent condition, and there just is no reason to touch your ball, even if it gets a miniscule bit of dirt on it.  Obviously, if there is a major weather event or abnormal ground conditions arise, we will modify the policy as needed, but the blanket “lift, clean and place” policy is hereby rescinded.

We had eight participants today, all members.  We played our normal skins game from the blue tees (Leo and Steve played from the white tees).

Egbert posted 42 points to win the Stableford competition by one point over Graham and Andrew (41 points each).  Egbert also won the most skins (7 skins for 310 baht).  Brian came in second with 6 skins and 230 baht.

Bruce G got closest on 3 and 12 (times 2, since Andrew did the Walk of Shame on 7), and Brian got closest on 17.

Here are the results:

A beautiful, nearly cloudless day – Maka Bucha Day – no beer on tap, but plenty of good golf.  The course is looking very good, except for a couple of greens on the back nine which could be better as the pro tournament approaches.  We had eight participants: seven members and one friend (Jesse).  John Park returned after being away.  We played our normal skins game from the blue tees (Leo played from the white tees).

Jesse cleaned up most of the closest-to-the-pin prizes, taking Hole 3 and 12 (for two skins after no one hit Hole 7).  John Park hit the flag on 12, and his ball dropped to about 3 feet, but Jesse, never daunted, calmly put his ball one foot from the pin.  Jesse also put it close on 17, but Graham was closer, and Leo closer still.

5Points posted 41 stableford points (including an eponymous 5-point birdie on Hole 4) to take the top Stableford prize.  Leo, Egbert, and Bruce G each posted 38 stableford points to grudgingly share the runner-up prize.  all players ended up north of 30 points.

Here are the results:

  • Winner:  5Points (41 Points)

A beautiful day for golf — a little cloudy and some threat of rain that never materialized, followed by brilliant, sunny skies. Today is Paul and Young’s last round at Santiburi before they head back to S. We had eleven participants:  ten members, and one friend, Air, who came with Steve.  We played our normal skins game from the blue tees (Leo, Les, and Steve played from the white tees, and Young played from the red tees).  Scores were generally very good today, with four participants scoring over 40 Stableford points (Andrew (41), Egbert (42), Air (43), and Bruce G (43)).

Air and Bruce G won the Stableford competition, tying at 43 points each.  Andrew won the most skins, taking home 5.5 skins for a profit of 355 baht.  Bruce G came in second, at 4.5 skins and 245 baht.  Bruce G took two of the four closest-to-the-pin prizes, with Steve and Andrew taking one each.

Santiburi got hammered by a thunderstorm yesterday afternoon, with high winds, hail and rain.  The course survived nearly unscathed, except for several trees either uprooted or shorn of major branches (mainly trees between Holes 4 and 5).  The greens team were out early and apart from a few rough areas with leaves  and dead branches, the effects of the storm did not affect play at all.

We had nine participants today, all members.  We played our regular skins game from the blue tees (Young played from the red tees).  Bruce G put on a clinic, shooting a gross one-over round (44 Stableford points), prompting calls for the Fairness Specialist to sharpen his pencil.  You just can’t win without someone wanting to rain on your parade! Egbert came in second with 40 Points, and he won the most skins (6 skins, netting 290 Baht).  Bruce G came in second on skins, with 5 Skins and net 200 Baht.

No one hit the 3rd green, but Paul did the Walk of Shame on Hole 7, leaving the door open for Brian, who took two skins for his closest.  Graham did the Walk of Shame on Hole 12, and again Brian walked in to take the prize.  Young put one close on 17, and no one else could best her.

Results – Thursday, February 22, 2018; Bernie Memorial Announcement

Announcement:  Bernie Memorial Golf Tournament, Tuesday, February 27, 2018, 9:00 AM, Waterford Valley.  The Bernie Memorial Golf Tournament is an annual golf tournament, originally sponsored by Ray Terry (who purchased the trophy) to honor the memory of Bernie Moody, an avid Chiang Rai golfer who was very friendly, welcoming to all, and a big part of golf in Chiang Rai for many years.  Ray Terry has since also passed on to the great clubhouse in the sky, and the Bernie Memorial (along with the Tony Memorial) has become an annual event to honor the lives of all those Chiang Rai golfers who are no longer with us.  The tournament is being sponsored by Chiang Rai Golfers this year.  Several SMAF members are planning to participate, including 5Points, Graham, Bruce G, Andrew, and Paul and Young Park, among others.  If you are interested, please email your entry to chiangraigolfers@gmail.com by Friday so a draw can be sent out at the weekend.

Today was beautiful, sunny and warm — perfect for golf.  The course is looking very nice.  The greenskeeping staff is clearly putting the final touches on the course for the Singha Open professional tournament, which will be held March 22-25, 2018.  There are a few sand traps which are being renovated, and there is some sand on greens and tee boxes, but in general, the course is starting to come into its pristine pre-tournament state.  The rough is getting longer, and conditions will get better and better over the next month.

Today we had eleven players and 10 participants (all members) in our regular skins game.  All played from the blue tees, except for Young, who played from the red tees.

Scores were generally better, perhaps because of the awesome course conditions and dry fairways, which had a lot of run.  Everyone was in the 30’s (except for Graham, who scored 40 points to win the Stableford top prize.  5Points, Bruce G, and Paul each scored 39 points to share the runner-up prize.  No one won the closest-to-the-pin prize on Hole 3, but Brian got two skins for his closest on Hole 7, Bruce G won Hole 12 (Les was only half a foot farther out on the opposite side of the hole), and Graham took the honors on Hole 17 (about 3 feet from the pin; Andrew was about 3.5 feet out; both birdied).

Save the date (March 26, 2018)!  A tentative plan is in the works for a Chiang Rai community golf tournament, sponsored by SMAF.  March 26th is the Monday after the Sunday final round of the Singha Open professional golf tournament.  The course will be in pro-tournament form, with long rough and Sunday pin placements.  We will play like the pros and have a chance to win a trophy, just like they do!  We currently have five tee times (accommodating up to 20 players)  and could probably get more if the demand is there.  We are putting together the details and will have an announcement soon!

Here are today’s results:

  • Winner:  Graham (40 Points)

Another beautiful day in paradise, with sunny and warm weather.  The course is in pretty good condition, but they are in the final stages of preparing for the upcoming pro tournament (late March), so there is plenty of work being done, most of which does not affect play.

We had eight participants, all members. We played our normal skins game from the blue tees (Egbert, Steve, and Darryl played from the white tees).  Egbert (who scored 47 points from the blue tees only last week) managed less than half that from the white tees today, yet still went home a winner.  Such is the game of skins.  5Points had a handicap-matching round of 36 points, yet won nothing.

Bruce G resumed his mastery of the par-3 holes, taking Hole 12 (for two skins) and hole 17 (after Andrew and Darryl did the Walk of Shame).  Egbert got closest on Hole 3.

Bruce G, with 40 points, edged Andrew and Graham, who each scored 39 points.  Bruce G also won the most money, taking home 430 baht (9 skins) – his closest rivals were Graham and Steve, who took home 70 baht each (4 skins).

A very warm and sunny day, with the course in excellent condition.  Today we had eleven participants – ten Members, and one Friend, Rob from Detroit, who came to Chiang Rai with his wife due to a family emergency.  We played our normal skins game from the blue tees (Darryl and Steve played from the white tees, and Young played from the red tees).  Rob birdied the 10th hole for 5 points, and also ended up winning 200 baht — not bad for his first time playing with the group.

5Points shot 23 points on the front, including a birdie on Hole 5, and followed with a solid 18 points on the back to post 41 points and edge Bruce G, who shot a respectable 40 points.  5Points also birdied the always dangerous 17th hole, garnering a closest-to-the-pin prize in the process.  5Points took the most skins, winning 7.50 skins and 500 baht; newcomer Friend Rob took second place with 4.5 skins and 200 baht.

A warm, cloudless day with temperatures up near 30 degrees celsius near the end of the round.  The course is in great shape, except for several of the greens have been recently sanded, but that did not affect play at all.

We had eleven participants, including Doc (who did not join in the skins game), all members.  We played our normal skins game from the blue tees (Darryl played from the white tees, and Young played from the red tees).

Egbert, Darryl, and Peter each shot an amazing 24 stableford points on the front nine.  Darryl had three birdies on the front nine, and Peter also had two birdies.  At one point (after six holes) Peter was one under par.  However, only Egbert was able to sustain the pace, shooting 23 points on the back nine to win the stableford with 47 (47!!) points.  Peter was second with 43 points.

The closest to the pin prizes were spread out – Peter, Darryl, Brian and Marc took one each.  Ultimately, the prize money was also spread out, despite Egbert’s dominance.   He had no four-pointers, just a very steady round of multiple three’s.  Everyone’s scores were generally good, perhaps reflecting a sharpening of everyone’s game due to the tougher conditions at Mae Moh?
